Amazon is making cloud storage a whole lot more affordable. It's overhauling the pricing structure for Cloud Drive today to offer two unlimited storage plans — neither of which is very expensive. For $11.99 per year, Amazon is offering unlimited photo storage and 5GBs of storage for anything else you want to host online. For $59.99, Amazon will host anything you want, with no storage limit. Those prices are a lot less expensive than what you'll find from many of Amazon's biggest competitors, including iCloud, Google Drive, and Dropbox. Microsoft also offers unlimited cloud storage (alongside access to Office 365), though it costs a small amount more.
Even though Amazon may be taking the lead in a big way on pricing, that doesn't make it a clear winner in cloud storage. Amazon is still at a disadvantage when it comes to integration. Apple has integrated iCloud relatively seamlessly throughout iOS, so many people are using it without even knowing it. Google can do the same with Drive on Android. And while Dropbox isn't default to any platform, it's almost become the de facto integration for many apps because of how widely used it is. Amazon doesn't have any of that (unless you're on a Kindle Fire), which largely makes this siloed off storage. That'll be fine for many, but it's not optimal and not where cloud storage is headed. Still, those prices will be hard to ignore by anyone looking to store files online.

On the plus side, it looks like third party software will be able to use it. From the TOU:
quote:So maybe it will be pretty easy for third parties to do the integrating.
Third Party Services. The Service may allow you to give third party websites, apps, and services (“Third Party Services”) access to Your Files, including the ability to make copies of Your Files, modify or delete Your Files, or create new files on your behalf. The use and storage of Your Files by Third Party Services will be governed by their privacy policies and terms. Amazon has no responsibility or liability with respect to your use of Third Party Services or the content, functionality, or acts of Third Party Services you use.

I'm kind of surprised they haven't done this before. They also should have autobackup software and make it compete with services like Carbonite. My main concern here would be Amazon is barely adequate when it comes to making good apps.

It's not something that I will buy now, but I will keep an eye on the reviews and see how it progresses.

That already comes free though to Prime members

So in the future if Plex supports Amazon, would it be possible to just upload all of my media to the Amazon Cloud and stream it straight off of there? I was thinking about building a NAS for my media, but could that be an alternative?
Does it work like that currently for Google Drive which they support?

quote:That sounds like what might be a common use for such a cloud service, so I don't see why it wouldn't work. That said, I haven't signed up yet so I don't know exactly how the files can be accessed right now. Also, the TOU says this:
So in the future if Plex supports Amazon, would it be possible to just upload all of my media to the Amazon Cloud and stream it straight off of there? I was thinking about building a NAS for my media, but could that be an alternative?
quote:So it's possible they might restrict certain usage patterns, but I don't see why they would.
Usage Restrictions and Limits. The Service is offered in the United States. We may restrict access from other locations. There may be limits on the types of content you can store and share using the Service, such as file types we don't support, and on the number or type of devices you can use to access the Service. We may impose other restrictions on use of the Service.
Edit: So I just signed up, and it looks like there are several apps that can use cloud drive already. Also, it seems simple for developers to make use of cloud drive by using login with Amazon. We may have to wait a while before developers really start using this.

Amazon does an iTunes Match type of set up for uploaded music, I would think we might get there eventually for movies, if only to not store the same mulit-gig file 20 million times. But the movie industry is still dragging their feet thinking they can charge 2x-3x more than RedBox for an HD rental. They'll eventually do what the music industry did and realize they have to lower the price to survive in a digital world.

I remember looking at the amazon cloud storage, but you couldnt setup a specific folder to backup like you could with dropbox/googledrive/mega.

Yeah, when it can be configured like a mapped network drive/folder on my PC, I'm sold.
