A large amount of them were French and Italian Americans because of their small stature.
And correct on the parachute. Low level bailing out you had no chance. My father jumped all over the South Pacific as an Army Paratrooper and they jumped between 600 and 700 feet which is very low but they jumped off static lines. No need to pull the cord. He said you hit the ground like a stone but that was a testament to survival. You didn't want to float and get shot at. His 2 bullet wounds from being shot in the air were a sight to see.
