Premier League clubs are collectively in profit for the first time in 15 years, a report from consulting firm Deloitte has revealed.

Combined pre-tax profit for all 20 Premier League clubs during the 2013/2014 season was £190m.

The figures released by Deloitte also show that wages - which used to be a huge part of clubs' spending - have grown by six per cent in a year from £1.8bn to £1.9bn, an increase lower than had been expected.

quote:

"Financial Fair Play has definitely played a key part," Alan Switzer of Deloitte's Sports Business Group told Sky Sports News HQ.

"It's important to note that's for clubs wanting to play in European competition, but on top of that the Premier League has also introduced cost-control regulations, so they've had a part to play for all the clubs in the Premier League.

"We certainly don't expect to see a return to the significant losses we've seen over the last decade. At an operating level, so that's before player trading, all but one of the clubs made a profit, so that's a huge turnaround from what we've seen.

"It's filtering all the way through and the huge size of the Premier League now, the advantage they have over their European rivals, means it's perfectly possible for all those clubs to operate profitably."

Apparently only one club was in the red.

With the new tv deal the league is going to be making bank.

A “clear majority” of clubs turned in pre-tax profits, with Manchester United the best performer, Mr Jones said.
The return to profitability was proof that financial fair play rules, which came into full force last season, were succeeding in controlling costs in the league, he added.
Clubs face substantial fines for running at a loss under the rules, which are designed to prevent wealthy owners using their deep pockets to fund losses while spending large sums on players.
In the five years to the 2012-13, several clubs made significant operating losses, including Aston Villa, Chelsea and Queens Park Rangers. Manchester City made the largest total loss, at £221m. The club was last year fined €60m by Uefa for failing to comply with the financial fair play rules.

What am I missing? Says first time in 15 years, so it seems like it is a shocker. Unless you weren't being sarcastic.

I don't have the energy to get into yet another argument about FFP's overreach, I've made my views perfectly clear.

my philosophy is that I don't think that the end result should be that all EPL clubs necessarily turn a profit. It's that they should be free to make those decisions for themselves and not have it forced upon them. So how can that be "proven wrong" by this?

so clubs making a profit is a bad thing

this is a business and when parts of the larger business are in the red big time it looks bad.

Its working and the profits prove it

but whatever

the financial clout of the EPL is only going to get better

should help improve the lower to mid table clubs

I didn't say that. I said I'm pro-freedom for each club to determine it's own priorities.

A cartel restricting the free market with the expressed aim of artificially suppressing wages is morally reprehensible, even when the workers in question are footballers rather than factory workers.

I'd be surprised if it's City this year with them not being allowed to spend as much as they usually have and also several loan-to-buy deals occurring which haven't hit the books yet.

meh the NBC contract isn't even that big compared to some of the Asian countries.

I forgot the #'s someone posted them here before of how much some of the networks in asia pay.

NBC looking back on it got their tv as a steal.
