Worst Day on Toledo Bend Ever

I always post and brag on here when I have a good hunt or fishing trip, so it's only fair that I come clean and tell the truth.

I got a call from 2 different guys that told me the "lake was on fire" Monday. I convinced my boss to go so we loaded up and headed down.

We started the morning about 9 am launching out of Shadows and fishing a bunch of spots towards the big lake in Tennessee Bay avoiding the muddy Negreet Creek area. I threw a wacky worm mostly, trying probably 10 different colors. No bites.

Other things I tried: Spinnerbait, rattle trap, Texas rigged lizard (multiple colors), and a Texas rigged crawfish just to change the creature. No bites. None.

Finally about 1 pm I tied up a pearl white fluke just so I could watch my bait. I wasn't seeing shite else in the water. On the fifth cast I pulled it over the lip of a flooded seawall and about a 3 pound female rolled on it. I told my boss, "Here we go. That happened way to fast to be a coincidence." Sure enough I fished about 100 more yards (20 cast or so) and a small buck bass rolled on it. We fished another 20 minutes or so, but it was getting near 2 pm so we broke for lunch and trailered up to Toledo Town for a burger.

My boss bought himself 2 packs of white flukes.

Big mistake.

We put in at North Toledo Bend State Park, and hit a spot where Polar Pop and I caught a few weekend before last. Nothing.

We continued to fish the fluke with ultimate faith and confidence the next 3 hours or so without a bite. For the last hour I picked my wacky worm back up but again it produced no bites. It was getting dark.

So what went wrong? We fished shallow with flukes and worms, and out to 6-8 feet with rattle traps and spinnerbaits.

The water was 64-66 degrees throughout the day.

The biggest difference I noticed was that pollen had covered the water heavily... Maybe the fish have allergies.

Also of note, there were boats everywhere. Incredibly packed for a Wednesday. I never saw anyone else catch a fish all day long.
