Wife possible victim of identity theft

She attempted to file her federal income tax last night on turbo tax. When she submitted the return, it was rejected with the message: "A return has previously been submitted to the IRS using this social security number." We already have been given instructions, such as : She has to make a report to the sheriff's office in the morning, meet with the fraud division of the IRS at Citi Place in a few days once the sheriff's report is completed. She's already contacted the SS administration, and her bank, and credit card service. Can anyone think of anything we might be forgetting?

I always wondered how this works. I assume the criminal makes up figures to get a return, right? How do they get the money and get away with it? How is the return even accepted without supporting evidence?

I don't understand why the irs needs someone to file a report with local authorities, seems like a needless step

Claim them as a dependent and then get the write off? No clue how often they actually get away with it.

if I remember right, when you file electronically, you aren't required to provide any supporting doccuments...basically, you fill in all of the required info and away it goes...the important stuff like your W-2 is sent from your employer to the government, so they can compare if they want to do so...
ETA: and if a fraudster works it out right, he can get child care credits and actually make a hell of a lot of money doing this...

Using it for dependent purposes is my understanding too. IRS won't even talk with her until she has a police report. Sheriff's office says that could take up to 5 days. So far nothing out of place is showing up at the bank or on credit cards. Not saying the number couldn't be sold to someone else that might use it for other reasons in the future.

The same thing happened to me last year. Had to go to the IRS building and file an affidavit.

Next year file immediately so the scammer is rejected.
The burden of proof falls in the second to file with that ss#.
Amend it later if you need to. It doesn't matter until the filing deadline unless you get a huge refund that wasn't due you.

I fixed that (icome) but according to that reading test you're only suppose to be looking at the first and last letters.
