Is travel protection worth it?
Posted by Phil0ndeeez on 3/25/15 at 1:32 pm00
Headed to Punta Cana for the honeymoon in September. Travel protection runs at $120 a person. Anybody been screwed by not having it or have a good reason to have it? Only thing I am worried about is a hurricane coming through and wrecking house.

Book it on credit card. You're protected.

it's never worth it until you need it

Yes, but $120 is pretty high. Shop around.

Depends on if you need it or not

This. I'd check your credit card benefits, as there could be a lot of things you didn't know you had.

I went to Punta Cana (stayed at the Excellence) a couple years ago and was fine. Just stay on the resort property and you'll be fine.

Subtle brag about not having a fear of flying. We're all very impressed.

I'm in the process of making reservations in Roatan and was wondering the same. Our contact there "highly recommends" it. She said if you book with American Express you are covered. I don't know about other credit cards.

Why Roatan? Just went there 2 weeks ago and it's a shithole. Nothing there.

Just a very nice bay with a great beach and dozens of inexpensive restaurants and bars on it with possibly the best diving in the Caribbean. Other than that, yeah there's "nothing" there.

The diving is pretty sweet. Why were you there?

My wife went to West Bay last year and loved it. I think most of the island is crap, but I thought West Bay is supposed to be nice.
My kids (9 and 10) love snorkeling, and the world's 2nd longest barrier reef will be less than 100 yards from our front door step.

More like floating around and praying no one sticks a harpoon in me
But I have been dieting.

Well you know what they say, flying ain't nothing, it's just falling with style.

Do they make a vest/belt with enough diving weights to make it possible?

Visa Signature cards offer travel protection as well

Curious. What does this have to do with travel protection insurance (which I never purchase)?
Because once you head outside of the resort boundaries, your chances of something travel-protection-worthy happening to you increases.
If you stay on the resort property, you mitigate these potential issues:
-Food poisoning/water parasite sickness
-Getting Scammed by locals
-Injury due to wildlife
-Injury due to water sports or other extreme sport
-Mugged/attacked by locals
-etc.
