You don't hire Scott Boras if you have any intention of signing a team-friendly contract. Bryant is trying to get to the FA payday as quickly as he can, which is well within his rights. the Cubs are trying to delay that payday by a year, which is within their rights.
The fact Bryant has hired Boras makes it LESS likely he'll be on the Opening Day roster as there is less chance he will sign a team-friendly deal buying out his pre-arbitration years in return for a longer term at a lower salary he could get by waiting for free agency.

I want him up opening day.
In a league without salary caps, I don't stress over years of control or paying more money a year earlier.
Cubs still have the power to sign him up long term before he becomes a FA. And that's most likely going to happen whether he starts in Iowa or the bigs.
As a fan, give me this dude opening day and let's start an exciting season on the right foot.
Except the Cubs would be buying out an extra year of arb and Bryant would hit FA earlier.

yea...9 games...12 whole cold arse days, or gamble that you can get the agent who almost never has a player sign an extension changes his tune and you don't lose a year.

Why do you think that?
Assuming that was true, which i'm disputing but for the sake of discussion lets go with it's 'likely.' Is 9 more games still worth the gamble even if it was likely but not a sure thing he'd sign an extension for another year of guaranteed control?

it's only 9 games he would have to miss for an extra 162 games in 2021. easy call I think. plus weather is crappy in April anyway. hard for anybody to hit homeruns with wind blowing in constantly. that and he is not on the 40 man roster yet

Which adds a funny twist to this. If the players union filed a grievance on his behalf they'd actually be advocating for a non-member (bryant) to replace a current union member (player that gets bumped from the cubs). h/t to bleachernation for pointing that out. I just found it interesting.

It makes you realize how smart Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer really are.

I'm surprised Boras hasn't petitioned MLB to induct Kris Bryant into the MLB Hall of Fame yet.

I do admire their style of management, but I don't know that you have to be a rocket scientist in this situation to figure out what's best.

40 man roster only exists from Sept 1 to opening day, yes?
I think part of the MLBPA's argument is that Bryant should be up with the Cubs on the opening day roster (MLPA obviously doesnt control what teams do as far as promotions) and is one of their 25 best players, hands down, especially at his position in which Mike Olt and Tommy La Stella are his competiton.

No. That's why the cubs delayed announcing either ross or lester, i'm thinking ross, for so long because they thought they could trade wellington and thus not have to make a corresponding roster move when signing ross (or lester).

I'm sure that's what it is. They should've done something about gregory polanco last year if they want any threat they make to not be laughable.
Also, I think we need to come up with names for both sides in this cubs fan civil war. KBOD (Kris Bryant Opening Day-ers) vs. STC (service time concern-ers)
I'd say we meet in the bleachers and fight it out, but you know...

Put me in th STC camp. I don't understand why anyone other than Kris Bryant and Scott Boras would be in the KBOD clan. It's 9 games vs. a year of extra control where we will likely have to pay Giancarlo Stanton type money to keep him if KB hits his ceiling.
The window is clearly between now and when that happens.

While I agree he's one of the best 25 offensively, the guy has 4 or 5 errors in less than 20 chances at third in ST. Let's pump the brakes on the position part.

It's quite clever.

He had a .944 fld % last season in the minors. Olt's was .929
Tommy Lastalla hasnt played an MLB game at 3B

That surprises me about Olt. I thought it was a general consensus that Olt was far and away the better defensive 3b than bryant.

Olt did not have a good year at all last year.
Looking a little deeper, Olt's career minor league FLD% is 0.938 at 3B. Bryant's is 0.942. That is very interesting about Olt...I was under the impression he was a way above average fielder.

i get tripped up on defensive metrics. I can look at olt and look at Bryant and swear up and down that olt is much much better. I'm guessing there is something about making plays he shouldn't.

Derek Jeter's career fielding % was .976
Ozzie Smith's was .978
Fielding % is just one stat, and unfortunately I can't give you others due to SSS, but the consensus is that Olt is the better defender at 3rd.
But that doesn't really matter anyways. He needs to get time in 3rd & now LF.
ETA: I'd still be cool with him at 3rd. His offensive stats would surpass his defensive shortcomings.
