Tent camping at Chicot State Park?

Any advice for a family of first timers? I'm assuming we just call and reserve a spot?

The South Campground is much better suited for tent camping. The sites are further apart, so you get a little quiet. The North CG is newer and set up more like a parking lot.
We usually make reservations online, so we can see a picture of the campsite first. We've never been able to not get a spot at Chicot, even on holiday weekends. The place is just that big.
Lock your food up at night. The raccoons out there know how to open ice chests, even ones with latches!

Go to reserveamerica.com for reservations and a campsite park map to chose your spot you like. They have a picture of the spots and tell you if it's tent friendly.

Everything Shexter said, especially about the coons. While you're there, drive into Ville Platte (K&B grocery) &/or Mamou (T-Boys) & pick up some boudin, sausage, & specialty meats.
Also, be aware if ticks & red bugs; Chicot is notorious for ticks & red bugs

if i had one recommendation it would be to invest in some thick, quality sleep pads. this goes farther toward you getting a reasonable amount of sleep than any sleeping bag you can buy.

My advice would be to get a cheap air mattress for the first few times camping, then just put your sleeping bag on top of that.
That's the most comfortable way I've found for sleeping in a tent.

This.
Klymit Static V Sleeping Pad
The most comfortable and affordable sleeping pad on the market. Compresses to the size of a small coffee thermos.

K&B grocery
This is now "Shop's Grocery". I worked in the meat department during high school and know the guy who bought it. Good quality meat, boudin, and cracklins. If you are camping at Chicot, I highly recommend you visit Shop's Grocery.

Check out reserve america online. You can see pictures of the sites. Just went a month ago, stayed at sites 14 and 16. Definitly want to stay on the south loop for tenting. Chicot is a great place for a firt time. They have a small park for kids to play and several small trails to hike on. you can also rent canoes and small flatbed boats. You will enjoy it. I recommend on a first trip stay close to the bath house. Lock up food at night because the racoons are experts at breaking and entering ice chests.

How's the fishing out there and what are the rules on keeping fish at state parks?

if you're tenting, you won't have to reserve a spot.

however, you can catch all the bream you want.

Went yesterday. Caught 1 bass on a cotton candy lizard by a large grass mat. About a 2 lber. Gave up on bass and tried for bream for about an hour before leaving. Caught 4 sacalait and 3 bluegill. Only 2 of the sacalait were worth keeping. If I had more time I probably could've caught plenty enough for dinner.

Chicot also has some great hike-to primitive sites that are right on the lake.
I wouldn't recommend those for the first family camping trip though.

THIS. The whole Chicot/Lone Pine/St. Landry wooded area's is crawling with them. Every time I go rabbit hunting I seem to get those SOB's on me.
