Yeah the SG depth in the league is not so great.

Meh, PGs have morphed over the years. You can be an ultra athletic score first type now, as long as you can get others involved.

If you just ranked guards, 15 of the top 20 would probably be PGs.

I would say guys like Westbrook and Rose as examples are just as much SGs as PGs. Most of the list falls more as combo guards. I don't think you have many guys that play this mainly ball handling distributor role anymore.

Harden is considered a SG, but is not much different than many of the other combo guards.

Since the roles have been so blended with the ideas of combo guards and guard/forwards. I think it makes more sense to just have an overall distinction as a guard. This is why I think it looks so much deeper because they are trying to fit guys into positions that really don't exist anymore.

It's almost time to retire positions all together. I mean sometimes the warriors trot out 4 guys who are between 6'7 and 6'8 along with Curry. Draymond green isn't a "center" and Harrison Barnes isn't a "power forward".

ETA: their starting lineup has basically three guys who can fill the SG, SF, and PF roles on their team.

I love what Jalen Rose says. "Positions were created so casual fans could follow the game."

It is just dumb.

It makes more sense to call it a best players under 6'4 or something.

Lebron James has elite dribbling, passing, shooting, and driving to the basket skills. Can we call him a PG?

Ball handlers, slashers, shooters, post players, what you do is more important than what position you play. Rondo and Lillard do not play the same "position".

ETA: another example is Tony Allen and Kevin Durant, both play a wing position (SF/SG) but are completely different players. Or Patrick Beverly and Stephen Curry, there are so many examples of players who play the same named positions but have completely different roles.

Tony Parker has been terrible this season. If anything he should be lower.

Rose should've been left off altogether. Who knows where he's gonna be going forward? He wasn't exactly lighting the world on fire this season before he was injured again.

It's often said that scouts define a player's position by who they'll be defending in the league. Of course that introduces a bit of a chicken/egg scenario but, generally speaking, I don't expect to see Harden guarding any of these guys for any extended period of time.

Parker is picking it up. He had a good March. Averaged like 18 and 6 on 56% shooting, and the Spurs have gone 8-3 during that period.

They've become pretty much obsolete in today's game.

Technically, Gronk and Jimmy Graham play the same position. Julian Edleman and Dez Bryant play the same position. Hell Tom Brady and RG3 play the same position.

Positions in all sports are subject for debate.
