According to 247, LSU had the 5th best recruiting class in 2013. At signing day, it was a class full of meat and players with bright future. Some of them have already shown great success on the field (T White, K Beckwith, E Pocic and R Robinson who is not part of the team now). T Bower is expected to start while Jennings job security varies from unpredictable to utopia. For a class plagued by indefinite 4* suspensions and departures ( R Robinson, J Brazil, M Jones and H Rettig; for LSU to have success now, G Gilmore, F Herron, D Smith are required to have immediate impact or at least enter the rotation consistently. All recruiting classes have players requiring time to adapt, learn schemes and playbooks, also players who leave or don't produce to the expected level.

The 2013 recruiting class has exhausted their room for error; Although several important seniors return and the 2014 players are sophomores now plus another top 5 class in 2015, more is needed for success. Some juniors/red shirt sophomores have to live up to their own expectations or surprise more than one if LSU wants to avoid postponing success for next year and claim it this one.

On a more positive note, C LaCouture was a starter all past year and names like J Diarse, R Jefferson, D Riley contributed rotationally and are expected to compete for more playing time.

What do you guys think?
Can we make the playoffs out of this tough and unpredictable SEC West only with solving the QB problem?

We can win games with the ground and pound. We need the d to be excellent though and we need our kickers to step up, but yes it is possible. I still don't see us slinging the ball around, but we don't have to.

I think the defense falls into place. With Orgeron here, we will again get pressure on the QB like pre 2013 years. With Beckwith now owning half a year of starting experience as the MLB, returning our SAM LB, Clifton Garrett as a backup, and Debo finally hitting the field, the LB corps is stacked and has elite athleticism. The secondary is the secondary. The only real problem is figuring out which stud plays opposite Tre White.

On offense, we are in year two of our OL scheme change and bring back 3 starters from last year. We actually get more athletic and stronger with the likely additions of Clapp and Brumfield. RB is stacked and lead by the beast Fournette. Top 4 WRs with a year's worth of experience on the field plus are being re-taught the fundamentals, not to mention we just brought in another haul of talented pass catchers. Two receiving TEs in Smith and Washington add even more weapons. The offense is set everywhere but at QB.

I will say this right now, if we get improved QB play (60% passing 200+ yards per game), we will win the division.

Alas, we had way too much going against us last year even before we got to QB play, but that is not the problem now.

I still want to see more of Herron. I don't know what to expect of him, but was excited about him during his recruitment. What's the word on him? His name comes up in spring and fall camp, but no impact on the field and little if any playing time.

A whole lot of txt to ask why didn't we get it done in 2014 - a lackluster 2013 class, or lackluster QB play. Based on what I saw, the problems begin and end with the play of our qb's. Whether that's on the coaches or players remains to be seen. It's been said here as well as any other place where LSU football is discussed, but I'll say it again......can you imagine how good the running backs would have looked had everyone in the stadium NOT know it was fixing to be Fournette through the left A gap?

I only have two concerns currently...QB and one guard position...Brumfield has one guard, but I'm not so sure about the other...jmho

I don't see Herron making any impact unless he gets down to 270 and improves his speed and strength. He's got the length to be an end but not the speed and he isn't suited to be a 300lb DT.

If Herron, Bain, or Gilmore ends up a contributor...great. At this point, I would take one and love two as RS Soph. I think coach O, will get some production from the DL. If q. Thomas is healthy, LSU has three good DTs and one of the aforementioned will make four. DEs are really more of my concern. Hopefully Bower, Clark, Teuhema, and Neal, or Arden and Washington can help here.

If 2013 class was any good on the OL other than Pocic, LSU should be fine next year. Malone, Dodd, Boutte, and Demond should be ready to contribute and Brumfield, Clapp from 2014, plus the new ones coming from 2015. If two or three are busts, LSU should be fine.

Can we get just average play at the QB spot? I see this year as a sort of transition year on Defense with a new staff. Must get better QB play or we are in for another tough year. Another year of telegraphing our offensive plays to the opposing defense.

rmnldr, I really thought he'd turn out to be a DT, but you're right that he doesn't really look strong enough to be a dominant DT. I hope he turns it around and makes it happen.

I think the DL will be fine without Herron...just need to see one or two OLs continue to improve technique...see some improvement already...Go Tigers!
