Recently bought off craigslist..prior owner kept it in great condition but the heating element snapped in the move.
New heating element: $31
Since I was taking it apart to replace that I looked online and found the blower wheel can get worn over time and stop working properly.
New blower wheel: $18
Took the whole thing apart, sucked all the lint out (oh the lint!) and realized this thing has like 5 parts.
A motor (took it out, wiped lint off put a tiny bit of grease on each axle)
A drum (drum belt was in good shape so i left that)
A heating tube with heating element coiled around.
The blower wheel.
After putting it back together, its like this sucker just came off the showroom floor.
The old school maytag repair guys online said I should get another 20 years EASY before i have to do anything to it.
frick those new dryers. no school like old school.

I like those old dryers.
When I was little my mama would get a fresh pair of jeans out and I'd barely be able to get them on they were so hot. The backside of the button would burn your belly.
You just don't get that kind of service these days with these new ones.

I guess this is a subtle brag thread but I'm not sure what it's about...
Washing machine?
Your repair skills?
That you moved?
A little TOO subtle IMO

yep. fortunately there are TONS of these around on craigslist..people don't realize what great appliances they are and let them go for $100.
for me its one less thing to worry about. it looked brand new once i wiped it off & vacuumed all the lint out.

We had a 10 page washer and dryer thread that I thoroughly enjoyed last week. I couldn't make it through your first post in this atrocity of a thread.

bragging about fixing a 30 yo dryer makes women moist.

Waiting on our new Speed Queen W&D to come in. These are about as "old school" as you can get these days.
Won't ever own another Samsung or LG appliance.

Those are great units, but the 80 series Kenmore and the Whirlpool it is based off of are the GOAT.
Maytag has a lot more parts, and the bearings jam up often. A belt is like $5 and should be changed anytime the cabinet is open (unless it's been serviced in the last year or two)
Honestly though a dryer is a dryer, a 2015 Samsung isn't much more complicated than a 1978 Maytag once you open the cabinet.
All units have heat, motor, drum support and a friction reducing surface to use.
Newer ones only really add in extra thermal cut-offs and now sensors called "thermistors". It's the way dryers are controlled that has changed. In fact the gas coils introduced by Maytga in the 80's are the foctory standard on all gas dryers. You could take the coils out of a 1980 Maytag and put them right in a 2015 GE.
(of course they are only a $10 part so that owuld be silly)
The only negative really of your design dryer, is the fan and hard it is to change when it gets jammed.

that was my first choice but after comparing the price ($100 for the set) i kept on eye on craiglist for the maytags. i think 2 or 3 sets popped up in a month so it was easy to choose the set that was in the best shape.

Those are the best you can get for longevity. It is so very very rare for us to get a call for a Speed Queen. I get more Miele and Asko calls than Speed Queen, and Speed Queen has a larger market share. They just do not break and they have the best factory warranty to cover defects. Because of this, not many places like to sell them.
(Like Capital ranges)
