Writing a cover letter for a position that just opened. Tipped by a company employee. She said the position is in a city thats 3000+ miles away, but she said she thought they could relocate the position to a city that's only 1000 miles away.

Obviously I put in my cover letter "willing to relocate", but do I add" my preferences are city B if possible" as well?

No, don't mention preferences unless they ask for them.

Cover that in the interview. Your resume and cover letter are just to get you in the door for an interview

Just put willing to relocate and then bring it up during negotiations.

I don't think she's really an informant. I'm sending my information to her for her to pass along.

I would say don't tip your hand. Leave all those decisions up for discussion once you're close to or have secured an offer. At that point you have power to say yes or no. You can't get to that point if you've been eliminated early based upon a sentence or two.

Don't worry about it, you will never hear from them.

Willing to relocate will suffice for the initial screening and then negotiate after interview when offer is made. It behooves the company to offer a closer location if you're selected to reduce the relocation package.

Just put willing to relocate. You'll go into more detail with them later.
