My wife has a 2010 Honda Accord. Thursday she said she saw a light on the dash flashing about the fuel cap. She said Friday when she got in to drive, the fuel cap light was gone and never came back on.

I pulled it out of the garage Saturday morning and pulled it back in that evening. Yesterday morning we were going to take her car to church and so I got our son in the car and went to crank it and all it would do was turn over and would not crank. I turned the key forward and could hear the fuel pump charging.

I know that doesn't exactly mean 100% that the fuel pump is good. But, what else would you guys check for?

How many miles?

IDK what a "fuel cap" light is?

I assume the fuel cap is on and tight?
Has she recently purchased gas?

It has a light that will show on the dash that says "Check Fuel Cap"

It's been checked, lol. I took it off and put it back on to make sure that it was on securely and still nothing.

Purchased gas at the beginning of last week I believe. Always get gas at the same place by our house.

A buddy of mine has a test tool that he's bringing over today to see if there are any other codes that pop up. Another friend that works at the auto supply next door to where I work said he wouldn't think it would be the fuel pump as the car is not that old. He said he would think we would be looking at a relay possibly. He's ordered me a fuel pump just in case though.

Makes sense.

Good plan. I've seen a clogged cat cause something like this, but more inclined that it's fuel pump related.

Yeah, I didn't believe it until she showed me the picture she took. I guess that's the most straight forward gauge light ever other than the normal gas gauge, etc.

Check for an Oring or seal on the inside of the cap. It may be damaged or missing if the light comes on. Or jsut not tight enough. I'm guessign that car has a sealed fuel system so if the cap is not on properly or has a leak, it will set the light off.

Shouldnt have anything to do with it not starting though.

That has been the reason for many "repairs" at shady shops

Yep the gas cap will throw a code and the shop will tighten it and charge you for a cat, the bastards. Everybody should own a scantool

My cousin's car has done this once or twice a year every year since New. Same car.

After an oil change when he backs off the ramp to check the oil on a level surface, when he goes to restart it merely cranks without ever firing.

Never been able to trace down the issue.

Given that for him it always occurs after an oil change... I wonder if the engine has some little failsafe to kill spark if the oil pressure is low?

Check fuel cap light come on when you leave a fuel cap loose or you have a malfunction in your evaporative emissions system (Evap. pump, busted evap line, etc.). This should not prevent it from starting and also is not tied to the fuel pump in any way. I think it not starting is a total coincidence and not related to the fuel cap light, I've been wrong before though.. Post what codes he pulls with the scanner and let the OB consult you on the problem

Fuel caps have an o-ring on them. They tend to dry out with age. It's possible the cap was a little loose. But the cap may need to be replaced with that many miles.

Sounds like a coincidence to me that it wouldn't start a few days later. I've never heard of or seen a loose or defective gas cap cause a car not to start.

Please clear something up for me. You said it will "turn over" but won't "crank". In my basic car knowledge "turning over" and "cranking" are the same, meaning the engine turns over when the key is turned but it won't "fire" and actually start. Is this what's happening?

Is there a check engine light on now also?
