I've been seeing friends who tell me they don't put their kids on their insurance. They just basically insure the car. How is this done and why? I don't get it. What happens if there is an accident and the kid isn't an insured?

Insurance is a fricking scam. Grow some balls and roll the dice.

Huh? In America, the CAR has the insurance. Any person that drives my car is covered. The individual is not the determining factor

Kid should be classed as a primary driver on one of the cars you own. That's not always the case though, and they can still be listed as a secondary driver, on the others. But some people don't put them as primary on any to save $, although that's not what you're supposed to do.

I think that makes sense.

i don't think that's possible. I think if they live in your house and are a licensed driver, they have to be included. I'm going through this for the first time right now.

depends on the state I guess, in TX unless the child is an excluded driver whatever tickets/accidents that he/she might have will affect you until they're an adult, and as someone below said, insurance is a fricking scam

he needs coverage

unless he has a bond to cover that.

if he get's in an accident without, he may have to pay if at fault etc.

if you put him on yours, better read the fine print cuz tickets may add to your premium etc

My son is the primary driver of one vehicle and is listed for the others.

It cost a little more to put him on all vehicles, but if I need him to drive another car it is no hassle.

You have to if they are a licensed driver. If you don't then they can deny the claim. They class them on the vehicle. If you buy them their own car and it's brand new be prepared to take it up the arse.
Basically something happens, kid smoked another car and you call the claim in. Officer writes report. Adjuster gets this info and says the kid wasn't classed on the vehicle and has apparently been licensed for 1 year. You are intentionally misleading the company.
If someone is stupid enough to risk taking on a liability claim from some yahoo then go for it, otherwise put your kid on your policy as soon as they are licensed. If they have good grades and have drivers ed you tend to get good discounts for those two.

True to an extent. If I let Broke borrow my car one day I don't have to add him to my insurance.

According to my policy, I have to add any licensed drivers in my household to my policy unless they will not be driving my vehicle... then I can add them to the excluded drivers list.

I'm pretty sure all insurance companies have the same policy.

Insurance companies aren't stupid. Policies are more expensive for teens for a good reason. They do dumb shite. If your kid wrecks your car and isn't on your policy you will have a helluva fight on your hands as far as who pays for what and whether or not you're dropped all together.

I endorse all of this. You don't have to include people not part of your household. You have to EXCLUDE licensed drivers who are part of your household.

If you unreasonably mislead or delay in updating your insurance information with these newly licensed, expensive, young drivers, the insurance companies will have grounds to dispute coverage. Now, courts are loath to deny coverage if it ultimately denies recovery to an injured party, but if it is clear that you committed insurance fraud, this can cause all kinds of trouble for you.

Does cost more, but if they have the discounts it's negligible.

it was next to nothing to insure my daughter when she turned 16, the bending over started when the two hardlegs started driving, and they had the grades, as did I, still never seent no discount
