If both our bigs come back next year, are we a favorite to win it all?

I now it is a pipe dream, and I am sure there will be many "not going to happen" type of responses.

But humor me in my hypothetical.

I think we'd be one of the top 3 choices to win the whole thing.

I think we'd have to see how Coach Jones handles it, first. He doesn't have the same track record handling egos like Coach Cal (obviously). I'd bet they'd be preseason Top 10, though.

If we're going pipe dream route, if they come back and we reel in Newman as well, it's easily a top 5 preseason team. Without getting into a starting lineup argument, you could be looking at a five of Newman, Blakeney, Simmons, Martin, Mickey.

Then you have Patterson, Quarterman, Hornsby, Victor, Elbert, Gray, Epps all coming off the bench. You basically have a second five right there

There's not many that could match up with that talent-wise, then add in the key pieces coming off the bench and there's no reason they should not be a preseason top 5 team. They would have to do something next year because the 2016-17 season will definitely be a rebuilding one

AS Dick V put it, if one of them come back LSU is top 5 easy.

Now they still have to play the games, but depending on what UK does and who returns the SEC would be UK - LSU and then everyone else.

But If we add Simmons, Blakeney, Victor, and Newman and Keep Martin, Mickey or both, I would say this team would have instant Elite 8 / Final 4 potential. I wouldn't guarantee them to win it all though, too much has to fall just right for a NCAA title.

this is the key honestly. Year after year you see stacked teams come short and even very well short at times. Freshmen seem to have a tendency of not playing that good of defense, so it'd be interesting to see how the incoming guys respond. still, you can't help but think that Jones will move to his ideal press now that LSU will actually have a bench

I mentioned this before, but our second five would be starting SEC caliber if this all somehow came to fruition. I honestly think we have a good shot of it except for Martin. He has a ton of upside and probably leaves, even though I think he is a lottery pick if he comes back.

Ya know, I make no claims whatsoever to be capable of evaluating basketball coaching. (see my screen name)

That said, JJ has managed to bring LSU back to the tourney and has gotten improving results each year.

We aren't Duke or UK. Maybe one day that will change, but until then, I'm gonna have a hard time throwing JJ under the bus unless the improvement stops.

pretty much. the best coach in LSU basketball history was notorious for underachieving, so I don't understand where fans get off thinking Jones' time at LSU isn't worthy of some praise.

if the program regresses in the next three years, you do everything you can to convince Tony Bennett's wife to come back home to Baton Rouge. otherwise Jones will suffice

Yeah. I mean, I hope it changes for LSU, but for the time being, 21-11 is not exactly something to sneeze at. It's been a LONG time since LSU was all that relevant in college basketball and even then, it was more anomaly than norm.

Even though I believe that WOULD BE a championship caliber team, no one in their right mind would pick us as a championship contender pre-season considering how we ended this year and coaching issues.

you're right. it takes a ton of luck too, hence the shitload of stacked teams that come up short every season

There would be some attrition.

Darcy would be gone for sure. Plus, you could redshirt a couple guys

Malone would likely be the candidate if someone left. Another option they could do is ask someone to walk on for a year. With the attrition that would happen after the 2015-16 season, they would probably be able to give it right back

Even if you redshirt, you are still a part of the scholarship count How many are you allowed to have? 12?

13 total

And to the guy who said Darcy would be gone for sure, you realize he played more than 2 or 3 other guys on the roster this year, right? I don't think it's that cut and dry.
