Ot mechanics: gas mileage issue
Posted by CENLALSUFAN on 3/23/15 at 7:33 am00
Just recently had my oil changed and went with a high mileage oil, synthetic, and I noticed after that my gas mileage started decreasing. As of right now it's about 50 miles off from what I normally get a tank. What could be the cause of this. It's a Ford focus 2.0 2005 with about a 129,000 miles...the only things I have had done to it is change the alternator and the thermostat since I've had it. Any ideas (other than bashing a particular brand of vehicle, it's been good so far) Thanks!

You need to drive double the speed limit to maximize gas mileage

Wat?
I have never remotely heard of a different oil affecting gas mileage.
There's another underlying issue.

That's what I was asking, didn't know...but I did hear that high mileage oil is thicker and could cause a loss of gas mileage.

Sounds like you have a warped Johnson rod.

When did you change the thermostat? A faulty thermostat can actually affect gas mileage. Oil can have an effect also if its a different oil than you normally use (especially if they put the wrong stuff in there)

Thermostat was a few months ago...hadn't had a problem up until now...maybe it's the oil..hadn't notice a decrease in acceleration power(the little it already had, lol)

how many miles do you normally get per tank?
have any of your driving habits changed? less highway etc?

Usually sit 320 when the light comes on and I'm at about 253 right now..and is close to coming on now...nothing really changed..

Are you getting a different gasoline blend?
Higher ethanol will lower your mpg. I was told Walmarks gas has 14% and realy affects the miles per tank.

We're you running conventional oil before, or just a regular synthetic?

I've heard that switching later on is not a good thing, but never really heard why (just crappy mileage or damaging the engine). That might be it right there.

You need to change the air in your tires.
Old air = lower gas mileage.
Old air = lower gas mileage.
