Who are athletes who remained at a reasonably high level for a long time and why did you or others expect otherwise?

Since I'm an NBA guy, I'll name two from there, but it could be applicable to any sport.

Jamal Crawford- He was so brash as a young player, I figured the league would grow tired of him quickly and his seemingly lackluster work ethic would catch up to him. Fifteen years in the league and he's still a vital piece for a playoff team.

Vince Carter- Freakish athletes seem to burnout quickly. It's not just the physical aspect, but the mental adjustment from being able to defy logic athletically to being below average physically once the 30s carry on. Credit to him for redefining himself and being professional enough to accept a limited role.

Thomas Davis- dude had 3 major knee injuries within like 3 or 4 years and still is playing at a high level. He's 32 and that says something in my opinion.

Bruce Matthews- dude played a LONG time in the NFL as a top lineman. In fact, no one rings a bell that did it longer than he did. Talking about linemen only.

Gordie Howe, played in 5 decades.

Hull did play 23 years, not a short career, but Howe is definitely who I was thinking about.

How about an old school guy like Tommy John? He played about half his career after the first Tommy John surgery on him. They named the surgery after him and he pitched 25 years or so around half after the surgery.

If someone would have told me Glen Big Baby Davis would be in the league in 2015, I would have laughed in their face.

Same. Heard a stat that he is something like only the 34th player in NBA history to play 1,200 games.

The crazy thing is that he still shows flashes of his athleticism too. He has crammed on some people this season. He threw down a monster dunk after the whistle in Dallas the other night.

Vince Carter has done what lots of superstars are unable to do. Kobe Bryant could never be a role player. It will be interesting to see how LeBron goes out.

I seen't it. He just turned into a player that picks his spots better to stunt on fools since he knows his opportunities to do so at this point in his career will be limited.

Ridiculously underrated shooter, too. Guy can flat fill it up.

He throws up some shots that make you want to scream at him, but you live with it because he can catch fire and really change a game.

He was really slumping once he came back from injury so he apparently went and watched old videos of himself to remind himself that he can knock down shots. Seems to have worked.

Jason Kidd is another good example of a guy who aged well. Changed his game.

Because of course he did and will be lethal in the playoffs once again

Yup.

And you know I gotta add my boys Timmy and Manu to the list in that regard.

They are the two best answers because of the level they have been playing at into their late 30s

Paolo Maldini played 25 years for AC Milan at a world-class level. He was 39 years old when he won European defender of the year.

I think his most impressive stat is that he retired with only one red card in his entire career, considering the amount of games he played at his position and the speed he lost in later years.
