Is there any doubt that it's 81?

Greatest LSU Basketball team by Ponchy Tiger

Definitely the 2016 LSU Tigers men's basketball team. They'll accomplish what no LSU basketball team has before making them the GOAT.

Macklin broke his hand or something in the regional.

This. LSU was tearing through the tournament, and probably would have won it all if Macklin had not gotten hurt in the Regional Championship. He just couldn't play at his normal high level in the Final Four, and the Tigers went down to defeat. What a shame!

JJ didn't play a lick for that team. Greg Cook, Tyrone Black, Willie Sims and the aforementioned players were the contributors. And yes no question that was the best Tiger team ever

They lost to the last undefeated team. Indiana with Bob Knight and Isaiah Thomas. They had it won. They should have won. I still remember.

Actually that's incorrect as for Indiana's record. They were not undefeated and yes, if Macklin doesn't sustain a bad injury in the elite 8 game, the Tigers could well have won it all. The 1976 Indiana team was the last undefeated team fwiw.

Sorry but that's not accurate at all.
JJ averaged over 13 minutes per game as the backup at point guard to Ethan Martin.
He was not an accurate shooter, but was a skilled ball-handler and hustled every minute on the court. He averaged 3.5 pts, 2 assists and 1 board per contest, participating in all 36 games as a true freshman on the SEC champion, Final Four team.

And Add '09; to eventual NC UNC. And the Tigers gave the 'Heels by far their stiffest competition in their run to the title. Same for the '87 team losing on a last seconds shot to the Hoosiers.

Greatest LSU Basketball Team is the Seimone Augustus led 4 consecutive Final Fours, we will never see that again, on the MEN'S OR WOMEN side from LSU Basketball.

Probably 1981 talent wise--should have won the national title.

Historically speaking, as someone noted above, the 1935 LSU team went as far as a team could go at that time.
