Here's the situation..

12 year old baseball and we were playing in a field that was bigger than regulation (280 down the lines and 300 to center). Normal for that age group would be 220ish down the lines. That's a lot of extra ground for a 12 year old to cover and a ball in the gap is a guaranteed triple or in the park home run.

Ball is hit to left field, past the left fielder. There is a crack under the fence and the ball clearly roles under the hole. I could see it easily from the first base dug out, so I'm saying it is out of play. The runner has already rounded second base and is on his way to third as it roles under the fence. Left fielder never threw up his hands, he just stopped when the ball disappeared. The kid keeps running and scores. Umps say since the kid never threw up his hands, and the base runner was already past second the plays stays as is and is awarded an in the park home run.

Does the rule say that a kid must throw his hands up to stop play? I have seen plenty of triples taken away because the ball bounces over the fence. How is this any different?

Really? Never heard of anyone being given a damn ground rule in the park HR before. That's nuts. There can't be a baseball rule that says this. Unless the rule reads you must thrown up your hands in the ball is out of play, or it remains live.

At that age I think whatever the ump says goes. Unless there are specified rules for the league or park. In that case, good luck finding them.

Kid should've been forced to go back to 2b. Had this happen at a few places when I was at that age. Each time it was a ground rule double.

I remember playing in a 12 year old league at a field with no fence (I'm old). One of my teammates hit a ball so hard it hit the elementary school like 300 feet away on one bounce. He crossed home plate before they even got the ball back to the infield. The umpires called it a home run and the other team's coach came out of the dugout screaming that it should have been a ground rule double because it hit the school. Apparently that had never happened before and the umpires didn't know what to do about it so they said it was a ground rule double.

That's what I would think. Unless it is written in the rules of baseball that if you don't throw your hands up the ball remains live.

If you are playing on fields that this can happen the league should have a rule. We had throw hands up and once you did runners got next base. There are others like the actual littke league league that says all balls stuck under fence is group rule double.

Always were told to throw out hands up, but if the kid doesn't touch it and it's stuck then it's real easy to verify. Lazy arse ump should've checked.

It wasn't stuck... It rolled completely out the park under the fence.

Same thing. What's the kid to do? Hop the fence and then throw it in trying to make a play? Ground rule double imo.

That's a double. Ump is a dick to expect the kid to throw his hands up.

If there is some kind of park rule, which is different from the normal standard ruling, then it should be talked about before the game starts by the umps wouldn't you think?

You would think. Did this play decide the game?

Find a place to play that doesn't have such a shitty fence.

But yeah that's bs. It should be a double.
