On the way home. Lucky no one else was killed. LINK

The New York Police Department says investigators have determined three New Jersey off-duty officers were at a strip club before their vehicle was involved in a deadly head-on crash with a truck.

Deputy Chief Kim Royster says the men were at the Curves strip club before the Staten Island crash Friday morning. She says detectives are going to review video footage and interview patrons and employees to learn whether any of the men had been drinking.

Royster says the 27-year-old officer who was driving is in critical condition. A 28-year-old civilian passenger died at the scene.

She says the 28-year-old officer in the right rear passenger seat died at a hospital and the 23-year-old officer in the left rear passenger seat is critically hurt.

The truck driver had non-life-threatening injuries.

Was he driving his patrol car? If not, I don't see how the cop part is relevant.

Interviews instead of tox screens?

Brilliant.

Maybe I should change the thread title to the article title- "Latest on wrong-way crash: Cops at strip club before crash"?

Wouldn't they take a blood test 100% of the time on a civilian? Why didn't they do it on the cop?

That's what I was thinking, easy, less time consuming, and is either a drunk or not drunk answer.

Because he was probably drunk if leaving a strip club and driving the wrong way on the road. Off duty cops should certainly be scrutinized more for a DUI than an average joe

Seriously? So we criticize cops for having the mentality that a different set of standards apply to them, then we suggest a different set of standards apply to them.

ETA: These guys should have certainly been given some form of a sobriety test, but not in excess of what any civilian would be exposed to.

I love these arguments. Scrutinized more, or held to a higher standard than other professions, but don't deserve any more respect or courtesy than the guy at the tire shop

ETA: The officer should receive the same investigation, and punishment anyone else would

"Hey, I am taking you to jail, and you might have trouble getting a job, and its going to cost you thousands of dollars and your license will suspended for ninety days..."

you don't think that someone that has the power to do that should be especially scrutinized for killing someone by drinking and driving?

IF he sustained substantial bleeding and they had to give him blood, then a toxicology screen may not tell them much.

What will be interesting to see is what the driver will be charged with if he survives.

While obviously hypocritical, the process should be receiving extra scrutiny, but not the officer.

I respect your opinion, but disagree with you.

My opinion would be different if the cops were on duty. Being intoxicated would clearly impair their ability to apply justice in accordance with the law, but the fact that they're off-duty entitles them to the same treatments you and I would be subjected to.

Totally agree. It's the same as firemen who start fires while on duty as opposed to off. You just can't commit arson on the clock. Ever.

I never said that they should be punished more severely, I am only saying that if they get more public scrutiny, then so be it.

I wonder when was the last time they didn't perform a BAC test after a late-night deadly crash?
