Do collegiate basketball programs practice free-throw shooting?

Does anyone know if free throw shooting is something that is worked on in practice, daily? If so, how long?

I'm genuinely curious.

I've heard a few of the interviews with coaches this week (before the tourney) saying sometimes you don't want to focus on free throws because sometimes it makes a team worse

I found that interesting

Damn. I would think a solid 15 minute session per day would be normal.

would probably do nothing to improve someone's free throw shooting

I don't know of many that deliberately set a lot of time in practice aside for it.

I've seen the guys currently at UK talk about going over to the practice facility on their own accord to do it. Joe Craft is literally a walk across the parking lot from the Wildcat Lodge and they have 24 hour access.

I guess I don't understand how something so fundamental to the game can be disregarded. Or so difficult that we missed six in a row last night.

a lot of teams have the players do it on their own time in their gym work when you don't have 12-15 guys all trying to simultaneously work on their free throws

it's not disregarded

imagine 13 scholarship players practicing free throws and how much time that would take when they could be working on defensive sets for their upcoming opponent

Aren't there like 6 goals in the men's practice gym?

I mean to be fair, most of those guys have formed their free throw shooting habits by college. And unless they're just atrocious at it, it's probably going to take a significant effort to break it.

Now I've seen a coach assign an assistant to a guy and have him shoot them when they break out for individual stuff in practices if they're really bad at it.

They probably don't work on it during practice much but I am sure each player is required to shoot a certain amount on their own each week

Should they? It's probably horrible return on investment. I mean, theres a lot of ways to improve. People get too caught up on free throws. The difference between a 90% free throw shooter and a 50% free throw shooter still translates to less than 2 points per game in almost all cases. Theres so many ways to make that up. And theres not unlimited practice time to focus on such individual skills.

They do but it's normally after practice or mix it in between drills. I've been to watch OSU's practices and this is what they did. The ones that need work are there a long time on their own working on their shot. With that said, it sure doesn't show in the games. OSU's FT shooting has been historically awful.

When I was coaching travel/AAU ball I made sure my kids practiced under pressure while they were tired. There are different drills to do this but over the course of the season it really helped increase their %.
