Why are 11 seeds in a play in game??

I can understand why 16 seed
teams are playing in but why 11's? Why are they being punished over 12-15 seeds??? I guess I've been under a rock. When and why did this happen??

last 4 at-large bids.
It is suppose to be the 4 worst auto bids and the 4 worst at large bids.
Ends up being 16's and 11's... Could possibly be 12's if enough autos were better than at larges.

They're deemed better than the automatic qualifiers who get the 14 15 16 type seeds.

Because most of those lower seeds are automatic qualifiers for winning their conference. The expansion would not have passed if they devalued those conferences by forcing them into play-in games.

This is how I feel. I'd prefer going back to 64 teams, but short of that, take the last 8 at-large teams and put them in the play-in games. Auto bid winners already did their job by winning their conference, make the at-larges earn their spot.

It really doesn't make any sense because the last 4 at-large teams in are much much better than the 1st and 2nd best 16 seeds...but they had to throw the mid majors a bone for this to even happen.

Agreed. I don't like auto bid teams being eliminated before the real tourney even starts. The last 8 at larges are borderline tourney teams anyway.

This is so dumb. It should be all 16 seeds. they are the worst teams. Ole Miss and BYU both deserve to be squarely in as well as Boise. Let these crappy 16 seeds play their way in........heck, that way they could at least experience a tourney victory. cause we all know a 16 is a sacrificial lamb to UK, Nova, Wisky, and Duke

They already did, by winning their conference tournament. Anyone that gets in by objective standards (autobids) should be treated better than those getting in by subjective standards (at larges).

Just make it 128 teams and everyone have a play in game.
