A bama team who lost their coach earlier in the week is dismantling the illini in the 1st round of the nit. This is the second year in a row they have failed to make the dance. I cannot believe illini alumni are pleased with his production...

Good question. Illinois is a basketball school that sucks at basketball. With Maryland joining the Big 10, they are really down the current totem pole.

They have a good recruiting class coming in, that's his saving grace, but another shitty year and he gone IMO

Kind of but of the ESPN top 100 there's 6 from Illinois and they got one of them. Nebraska got 2. They struggle a lot recruiting instate and it's one thing if KU, IU, and UK are taking them but Nebraska, that ain't good.

He was Hot Stuff about this time three years earlier in 2012. Now, not so much. I say he has one more year of suckiness and to quote the Hawk,"He gone!".

True but their top guy is from northwest Indiana which is essentially the Chicago area.

They're TERRIBLE in the actual Chicago area though.

Nebraska joined B10 to get to recruit Chicago basketball. I heard their AD say that.

The 2011 instate class should give them nightmares. Included:
Anthony Davis(best player of a national title team)
Ryan Boatright(2nd best player on a national title team)
Wayne Blackshear(got heavy minutes on a national title team)
Chasson Randle(2 time All-Pac 12)
Frank Kaminsky(possible national POY).

Most people in the Chicago land area hate University of Illinois. Schools like Illinois and Indiana will never be basketball powers because of students not caring, perception of the school and in state alumni being delusional

IMO What hurts Illinois is that the university is located in Champaign, IL. There is no connection from the players in Chicago to Champaign. I think this truely hurts Illinois in sports. Chicagoland has what 8 million people and is the 2nd best basketball city in America. If Illinois could somehow get these guys to stay in state, Illinois would be a basketball blue blood.

They aren't.

Chicago recruiting is notorious for the existence of middle-men. I disagree that the location of Urbana/Champaign is a problem. It's about two hours away depending on traffic and there is an Amtrak train that routinely like daily to and from Chicago.
Kids from families who eschew the middle-men are so sought after it's difficult to recruit Chicago cleanly.
Some coaches like Tom Izzo and the coach at Duke won't even bother with guys who are middle-men represented.
Grace needs to consider going the Calipari or Boeheim route if he wants to keep his job which sucks.

seems to happen fairly often, coach goes on a run at a small school in the tournament, big school hires him away as the next big thing, goes on to do jack shite.
