Nope, but my fiancee's dad was in procurement for a long time and retired as a Captain.

Walked right into a job as a VP of a contractor in the DC area making bank. So I suggest doing something like that

I worked for a service company in this field and got laid off yesterday. Trying to weight my options. This no work is for the birds.

My BIL spent 25 years in the Navy and never set foot on a ship. After he retired, he went to work for a defense contractor and they sent him to sea on an aircraft carrier as a technical representative

Amount of time deployed on a ship, possible places to be stationed. Trying to get as much information before calling a recruiter.

Don't go Nuclear Navy (submarine at least, carriers seemed to have a lot better life) if you have any desire to see your family.

Make sure to let them know how gay you are about the prospect of serving your country and that given the chance to serve on a ship, you'd be the gayest seaman the navy has ever seen. The navy loves happy crew members.

You would likely be a good fit to be a nuc submariner like your shipmate Terd Ferguson.

Get everything in writing and don't take your recruiter's word for it. If you don't like the deal you're getting, feel free to walk. Don't let him tell you, "we can work that out later."

I repeat, do not go this route if you want any life at all.

There really isn't a job specifically dedicated to NDT. I was a submarine mechanic and I was 1 of 2 guys that had QA training. Then I went to a tender and working in the planning dept doing controlled work packages... but most of my time before that was turning wrenches.

I guess Hull Techs would do some NDT stuff... but they also do a lot of other bullshite.

If you're looking to stay primarily NDT then you don't want to join the navy for that reason.

As a single guy, I loved fast attack life. Good crew, good foreign ports, lots of booze and bitches.

But if you plan on having a family it's probably not a good life.

I'll put it to you this way. My good friend's uncle was a highly decorated SEAL who was in the Navy for a good while and still works overseas as a contractor, and his dad was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Marine Corps who flew Chinook helicopters. He graduated from college and enlisted in the Navy with the specific goal of becoming a SEAL. He trained his rear off prior to going to pre-BUDS and got injured during it and was sent packing. He ended up getting sent to IT training to become an IT guy on the Blue Ridge in Japan for almost 4 years and only got to come home one time. I am strictly speaking for him and no one else in the Navy but he loves his country and his fellow Sailers but he can't stand the Navy anymore. Part of it is he feels like he wasted 4 years of his life in the bottom of an old ship.

Oh, and btw, when he got out of the Navy he didn't know what he wanted to do because all he ever wanted to do was be a SEAL and he didn't want to do what he got hsi degree in, so he used his GI Bill and went to Commercial Dive School where he was taught diving and NDT and got a job working for a fairly large contractor who does work all over the bays, rivers and intercoastal waterways all over TX and LA. He seems to like it a lot but is always working.
