quote:If true, terrible deal. The guy has done nothing to even justify a league minimum contract and we are guaranteeing more than we would have paid to Lofton? This smells of Ireland sticking by one of his bust moves.
Ellerbe takes $7.4 mill pay cut by Midget Death SquadIan Rapoport has twatted that the salary for this year is: $4.9 Mil ($1.1 base, $1.5 signing, $2.1 roster bonus) has it at $5.2 average over next two years

Who cares about how much guaranteed bonuses he gets? That's Benson's money. The only thing we should care about is his 1.1 base salary...which is a good deal imo.

because that money has to count somewhere. Since it won't be this year, then it's future cap space yet again eaten up by dead money. I'm not a huge fan of this practice to begin with, but I am even less so for a player that may or may not be any good. We will have to wait and see how the season progresses to determine if he is worth it or not, so this is a TBD status

maybe he'll just retire after this year.

Good to know. I was unaware of that.

You all need to calm down, it'll be ok.

I didn't think I'd ever see the day when shite-apple-rednecks (I stole that term from Justified) cheer man on man love. A new era is upon us!

Only 1.5 counts against our cap....

wow. that's great news. so they are overpaying him to play for us? That's what we call "Loomising." (enter Lester with his Lestering in 3...2...)

Based on this (if correct), it basically was turned into a 3 year/$13.7 million deal with $7.3 million in guarantees. He does not mention a signing bonus, but does show a roster bonus this year (meaning $3.3 million cap hit in 2015).
As the roster bonus comes on 4/1, no way Miami already ate it. Not sure who Underhill is quoting there.

$3.2m total for this season isn't too bad, but I would be shocked if Ellerbe plays well enough to see his 2016 or 2017 salries.

This is incorrect, must have been posted this morning before the true break down came through. Everywhere shows his cap number as lower than that.

quote:Would be interesting to see how this is possible under the cap. If the roster bonus rewards him for being on Saints' roster on 4/1, not sure how Miami can take the cap hit for us. Maybe there is some sneaky way to write a contract that circumvents the cap rules wording. If so, leave it to Loomis to find and use it. If true, I feel much better as this becomes what it should be - a one year "prove it" deal.

Not sure how it works either I'm guessing it will all come to light in the near future.

They could have just converted the roster bonus into a signing bonus. Or they could just wait two weeks before making it official (not sure if it's all been submitted to the league yet).
But I can't recall a team ever willingly eating more cap than necessary to facilitate a trade.
