What are some hitting drills that would help to stop the chop swing?

Need to work with a kid that has developed a "chop swing". He's hitting the ball straight int the ground and seems to chop at a lot of pitches. He bats first int he line up and has always had a nice swing...most of the time would pull the ball but also had the ability to hit opposite field. Just recently, the past few weeks, he's been chopping and everything is going straight into the ground between he plate and the mound.

Is soft toss and tee work the best way to correct this, or does anyone know of any other tricks of the trade that I could work with him on?

Get a sawhorse or something flat that you don't mind messing up and put a ball on it. If he can swing and hit the ball and not the saw horse then his swing will be flat.

Don't tell him to keep his elbow up. That's what it seems like all parents say, hence the high point he starts his swing. The bat needs to be on the same plane as the baseball, not above it.

Try to tell him to keep his back elbow tucked.

Sounds like something that my hick arse youth coach would have done .

Not at all. Just reminds of when a bunch of kids were stepping out and my coach put a cinder block behind our front feet. Turns out he can't pitch worth a shite and ends up hitting all of us at least 3 times each.

Do tee work and soft toss and see what he's doing with his hands/arms. As another poster said he's probably raising up his back elbow

Take video. Visual evidence of what he's doing wrong is always a big help at high school level and above. If he can see what he's doing and why he's getting the result it'll be easier to change.

There's a ton of apps out there that are built for this purpose.

Whatever you do, don't try to get him to fix it by trying to purposefully hit fly balls. I know that's crazy and I've seen coaches dumb enough to try it.

Get a Griffey Tee. I don't know if they still make them but I am sure you could find a used one somewhere.

It could work...but, you can't make a swing drill recommendation without, you know, actually seeing the swing.

Well certain drills, you know, fix certain flaws. We already know the flaw, you can suggest a drill.

If your swing is long as shite I can suggest the fence drill. Stand facing a fence or wall. Put the handle of the bat on your belly button and the end of the barrel on the fence/wall. Stay that distance from the wall and take a full swing. The bat should stay inside the fence/wall.

Here is something I've used. SKLZ Zip-N-Hit But I don't use it the way it is designed. I put the ball in a stationary position like it is on a tee, instead of using the handles to send the ball towards the hitter. The string helps with teaching a good swing b/c if you chop down, the ball is just going to bounce in one place. If you swing properly, the ball is going to slide down the string.

Is he fighting to keep his hands in and rolling his wrists over in the process?

Like others have said, either video it so you can see exactly what he is doing in slomo so you know exactly what to correct, or you can get a Muhl Tech Tee. If he chops or dips he will most definitely tear the tee up and not the ball.

Muhl Tech Tee
