Report: Minnesota United will be MLS club No. 23

Good call, MLS.
Now the race for No. 24 is down to Sacramento and Miami.
From ProSoccerTalk:

Minnesota United, which currently competes in the North American Soccer League, is expected to be granted an MLS expansion franchise, according to multiple sources. An announcement should come in the coming weeks, perhaps considerably sooner than the 45-day timeline referenced last weekend by commissioner Don Garber.
Speculation has been increasing in recent months that United had taken the lead over the Minnesota Vikings in the race to bring MLS to the Twin Cities. In October, SI.com reported that Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor and Twins owner Jim Pohlad joined United owner Dr. Bill McGuire’s investor group.
A month later, the group welcomed Dr. Glen Nelson, a member of the family that runs hotel and hospitality giant Carlson.
And at a recent event for United supporters, McGuire told fans, “We have saved you from having to worry about your team playing on a plastic pitch … You will be very excited about the news you hear shortly."
On Thursday, Minnesota soccer website Northern Pitch reported that, “MLS has provided written support for United’s efforts in building a stadium in downtown Minneapolis.” It’s now understood that the “written support” was a signed Letter of Intent from the league confirming that United is the choice for team No. 23, assuming construction of that stadium is confirmed. The club already has an option in place to acquire a piece of downtown property adjacent to the Minneapolis Farmers Market, just a couple blocks from Target Field.
MLS sources told SI.com Friday that United is the choice. Neither United nor the Vikings would comment. The league office sent SI.com a statement saying, “We remain on track to announce the next MLS expansion market in the next 30-45 days. No specific date for an expansion announcement has been set.”
Good call, MLS.
Now the race for No. 24 is down to Sacramento and Miami.
From ProSoccerTalk:
quote:
With Atlanta, Los Angeles and now reportedly Minneapolis set to join the league, only a single expansion place remains as MLS aims to feature 24 teams by its 2020 season.
Straus goes on to speculate that Sacramento Republic would likely join United in the not-so-distant future, nabbing expansion place No. 24, if not for David Beckham’s ongoing quest to bring a team to Miami.
MLS’s deal with Beckham stands, so he’ll be given every opportunity to secure a stadium before the league makes its decision.
United always seemed the more likely — and wiser — choice of the two Twin Cities bids, as they’ll eventually play in their own stadium, while the Vikings bid was built around the NFL team’s $1-billion, 65,000-seat domed stadium which is currently under construction.

It is a good choice for Minnesota. And I don't want to hear a peep from STL people. Until you get an investor and a SS stadium lined up, shut the fukk up.

Miguel Ibarra will now be an MLS player.
Can someone clear up the stadium situation for me? I did not click on the link. Will they play in the new stadium? Is it also designed for soccer like Atlanta?

I'm not sure why Budweiser doesn't foot the bill for a new team in SL. They could brand the frick out of it and they are based there. Plus they are European now and I thought those ****s loved soccer.

Can't believe the hipsters couldn't get soccer there

Nowhere to put a stadium in the downtown area and real estate in ATX proper is crazy expensive. They could get a stadium in the burbs I'm sure but I don't think MLS wants that and rightfully so.

Fret not.
Austin, MN is only an hour drive away from Minneapolis.

What's the optimal number of teams for the MLS to build to? I'm assuming this has been discussed before..

I'd argue that they should've capped it at 22. Most top-flight leagues overseas are at 20 and are working with a much deeper talent pool.

24. But they will eventually merge with NASL and USL down the road and create two divisions for pro/rel. This is at least 20 years down the road.

I tend to think of it a bit differently in the US due to geography. You have 20 teams in most major leagues internationally as well as many other well supported teams in lower leagues in each county.
Take England for example you have 20 teams in the Premier League but almost every city has one or more clubs that play in some level of league play. Yet this is all in an area smaller than the state of Alabama.
With the size of the US I would think you need more teams and more related leagues in order for local support and infrastructure to grow. If there are no local programs that start the talent development process then we will never be able to win internationally at the highest level.
Louisiana parents aren't going to move to Florida or Texas for their kids to play for an MLS club development team. We need to have as much local support as possible since the college system is garbage for soccer unlike other sports.

Its going to be more than most people "want". With the nature of TV contracts in pro sports in the U.S. its going to climb towards the 30s IMO.

Just every fukking time there is expansion talk, STL folks whine like a girl jilted at prom about why they don't have a team. It is annoying and grating. Go wipe some butthurt on your arse and move on.

Sounds like you are the only one crying and being a bitch in this thread.

St. Louis has one of the oldest soccer traditions in the country. Everyone plays here. The city certainly should get a team, but I've heard no talk of it. It's more deserving, in a pure soccer sense, than Miami and San Francisco.

Who hates on St. Louis this much? You must be a Cubs fan or something.
Most people who want a club in St. Louis understand why they aren't getting one. The bitching is not directed at MLS but at the things you mentioned above - inability to line up sponsorships and built a soccer specific stadium. It really is a shame. It's a great soccer town.
