GoPro hero 3 white versus Go Pro Hero

Kids want a go pro to take to Costa Rico to film water falls, zip lines, fishing trips, etc. They are 12 and 15. I want to something reasonable as they may never use it again so looking at these two models but damn if I can determine which is better and why, although I assume the 3 must be better as it cost more. Which one would you guys recommend and why?

My 7y.o. wanted on for xmas and I wasn't sure how much he'd use it or if he'd rag it out. Got him the regular Go Pro and it has worked fine and shoots good video for him to gather clips. I think the newer ones have WiFi controls and some other functions.

Honestly, and I've got a few, the 3 white, just because I'm sceptical in future GoPro software updates on older models.
But I'd get the hero3 silver simply because mine has been absolutely fantastic besides for battery life as opposed to older models.
Buy. Extra. Batteries. Get the knock off versions because they work better, imo
If the kids want the touch screen that comes optional, I say you make them work for it.
