The largest moon in the solar system harbors a salty ocean beneath its icy shell, the latest member to join a growing club of watery moons, NASA said Thursday. “The solar system is now looking like a pretty soggy place,” said Jim Green, director of planetary science at NASA headquarters. The ocean on Jupiter’s Ganymede is estimated to be much deeper than the oceans on Earth — about 60 miles thick and buried under 95 miles of ice. The moon’s ocean is believed to have more water than all of Earth.

The latest evidence comes from the Hubble Space Telescope, which observed Ganymede’s magnetic field for a glimpse of its interior. The workhorse telescope studied changes in colorful auroras in the moon’s polar regions that are produced by its magnetic field to determine the existence of an ocean lurking underneath.

Well shite. Not getting a look in there any time soon.

Every time they find something exciting, they find a huge caveat to go with it.

We sure is lucky

I can't even fathom 95 miles of ice. Just think about how tall that is compared to yourself

It's unfathomable for us. The tallest things we know are like two thirds a mile high.We can't even fathom the depths if it own oceans

Meanwhile all our efforts are focused on finding if water was on Mars millions of years ago.

Outer space begins only 62 miles above the Earth's surface. They have another 30 miles of ice above that.

But we can fix that quickly. Just take some SUVs there and start driving them around.

Think of the size of the glass of scotch that ice ball could chill.

Yeah, I remember a few weeks back some poster was wondering why we don't go here and drill for life. You could get the most powerful drill on earth, and it could go 95 miles without wearing out, nevertheless one we'd need to launch into space and command from afar with no repairs.

I mean, who'd be able to call them out on their bullshite?

It's not like everyone just has the capability to fact check anything being said about a moon orbiting a far away planet.

I wonder if they are stacking this up to our sub-plate oceans a few hundred miles below.
