Straight from The Walt Disney Company Annual Meeting of Shareholders, Bob Iger has delivered a bombshell of an announcement revealing that the first upcoming “Star Wars” standalone film, set to be written by Chris Weitz and directed by Gareth Edwards, is officially titled Rogue One and will star Academy Award nominee Felicity Jones. It will begin shooting this summer in London and debut in theaters on December 16, 2016.

The idea for the story of Rogue One came from John Knoll, an Academy Award-winning visual effects supervisor and chief creative officer at Industrial Light & Magic. He will executive produce along with Simon Emanuel (The Dark Knight Rises, Fast & Furious 6) and Jason McGatlin (Tintin, War of the Worlds). Kathleen Kennedy and Tony To (“Band of Brothers,” “The Pacific”) are on board to produce and John Swartz (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) will co-produce.

In addition, Iger confirmed that Rian Johnson will write and direct Star Wars: Episode VIII and that it will open in theaters May 26, 2017 – forty years and a day after the release of Star Wars: A New Hope in 1977. Kathleen Kennedy and Ram Bergman will produce the film.

Good to see they are going back to a summer release schedule. Also interesting Abrams was not listed as a producer for VIII.

So ViiI will come out only 17 months after Vii.

Without reading any more than what is in OP, this has to be about Rogue Squadron, the best fight pilot group in the galaxy. Jaina Solo, Han and Leia's only daughter, was a member of Rogue Squadron, so I wonder if they are at least taking that from the expanded universe and making the movie about her.

No plot, but given the title I'm assuming Rogue Squadron.

Which, as a longtime player of the X-Wing and Tie Fighter flight sims, I'm pretty freaking pumped about.

Might as well let it go. That aint happenening.

The Rogues were formed after Yavin, Luke & co that flew speeders on Hoth referred to themselves as Rogues, so thats still canon.

I'm such a nerd.

Rogue One has to be a Jedi. Why would they center a Star Wars movie around a non-Jedi? Who wants to watch that? So if it is a Jedi, might as well make it a Skywalker/Solo.

If you're talking EU as before, Wedge Antillies took over the Rogues after Luke left, so he wasn't a Jedi.

IMHO, the Star Wars universe is so deep beyond Jedi. I'd love to see a Rogues movie about a bunch of badass pilots that has nothing to do with the Force.

I am a fantasy nerd, not sci-fi. So the Jedi are what I love about Star Wars. I guess others prefer the sci-fi aspect of it over the fantasy elements.

I'm like you, I like the fantasy elements. However, there is a large following for all the other stuff.

I get that, but in the OT, you literally have 5 and a half Jedi characters in the entire Galaxy. Palpatine, Vader, Luke, and then Obi Wan, Yoda, and Leia. Obi Wan has one movie, Yoda has half a movie, and Leia we find out is a Jedi in the third act.

Its a big galaxy. Smugglers, Bounty Hunters, Pilots and Soldiers, so many other properties you could develop.

Look at the Avengers. Very separate and unique characters are flushed out in their own films, and then brought together. None of them feel like ancillary characters.

In the original Star Wars, Han and Chewie were the only non-Jedi characters that had any bearing on the story. Lando played a supporting role. If you haven't read the EU, you probably don't recall who Crix Madine or Mon Mothma were outside of the quick mention they got in ROTJ. Admiral Ackbar is a meme away from being an also-ran.

I have read over 50 books in the EU. None of the X-Wing books, though. Only the books featuring Jedi, which is most of them.
