A poster on the Turbo Tax thread stated his identity was hacked after e-filing his return. I e-filed with Turbo Tax last year and was about to repeat this year until I read all the problems it caused him. Repeating his hassle is the absolute last thing I need.

Is this a legitimate concern that slow mailing a hard copy return to the IRS would alleviate? I don't have a good grasp of just how risky e-filing is.

Any logical opinions and advice will be appreciated.

Anytime you send personal information, you have that risk. If you mail a check to someone, someone could steal the check en route and use it to tap your account. Someone at the company receiving the check could do the same thing.

The thing about the internet is that it doesn't require physically being there to steal the information.

Post mailing it simply slows down processing and refund.

I work at a CPA firm and we've had this happen to four clients. With their experience, we were able to quickly clear it all up with the IRS, and they weren't really affected. I'd say it's obviously a risk, albeit a small one. If you're worried about it and don't mind waiting longer for your refund, then go on and mail it in

My identity was stolen a few years ago. I was trying to pay $4k and IRS called and said they had recently mailed me a refund of $12k. Later I was told it was a hacker in Russia.

Now I have to submit my check and forms each year by snail. I believe this goes on for 5 years before I can E-file again. I make sure that I'm not getting a refund.
