While it helps now and I think it's a great idea, this is also a shift for the long term when Brees isn't around anymore, which I wouldn't be surprised if it was this year or 3-4 years from now. This team is unpredictable.

I think you are correct. They realized after last season that the real key to success is protecting Drew. Unger gives him an opportunity to have better protection. Committing to Ingram (who wants to be a feature back) means the run game will be featured more which will also help to protect Drew.
I'm not sure we get Reggie, his price tag may be a little too high.
Losing JG isn't the best thing in the world but I like the trade and it builds for the future.

Cooks and especially Stills to be used more.

Ingram to stay on the damn field after a 15 yard run.

A new 6'6" 6'7" target for Drew in the red zone.

A new speed back.

Brees upright and eating the ball when he needs to Leave making sh!t up to the politicians Drew.

all of this. Yes Payton is acknowledging that we must be more consistent with the run game and even be a run heavy team. No more of this new RB on every single damn play. No more run 3 times in a row and wait 8 more pass plays before we run again. Payton does often lose his focus in games and gets carried away with his calls. I think he realizes the importance of the OL and especially C (que in 504Boi's "the guy that hikes the ball"), and he is recommitting to great blocking first and all the rest will fall into place.

If you remember prior to 2011 that tall red zone target was Colston and he was almost as near automatic as Graham. Graham took that role from him. We have Colston two more years. Target found.

That's not to say they won't draft a guy to eventually replace Colston, but people are so quick to forget that he was the guy and Jimmy ate into his targets and his tds. We will be more than fine without Jimmy.

And that's not me knocking Jimmy. He was dominant when healthy and played mostly well when injured. But we will have success without him. I know because I've seen us do it before.

I don't know, but I'd definitely like to see more of Toon.
Graham will leave a hole in the tall receiver department.

I was just about to post about him. Any word on how he is progressing? Will he sniff the field or remain a practice squad guy?

One thought I can't shake from my head is that Payton is looking at the future and may want to trade up for Mariotta. I do not want this to happen, so don't take this as me hoping this is the case. I'm worried this will be the strategy. Once FA is done, we will have holes filled and be in position to draft BPA. Brees has 2 years left under contract, and he is soon to be making Levis commercials. Marriotta is a high character, smart QB. He seems to be a type of player Payton would like to have. I don't know if he will be very good in this league, so I don't think it's a smart move. Like I said, it's a thought that I can't shake... something in my gut causing me concern.

ETA: the Rappaport statement a while back of Saints looking for QB high in the draft keeps circling round my thoughts as well

I expect a lot of running, having Ingram for $4 million a year will look like a steal

Holy shite! I just saw the "finished in port wine barrells." I'm definitely buying now. Glenmorangie finished in port barrels is my favorite juice to drink

That's pretty optimistic. Even with all the cuts and trades, we are not that far under the cap to make that many moves, and all we have done is create more holes.

I know its the Saints MO to do it that way, but I REALLY think we are going to be relying on the draft to fill need more than ever.

I see us getting in FA a good CB, a decent OL, a decent LB, and then a variety of journeyman who may or may not make the team.

We are going to need 2 more LBs, another OL, another WR, a TE, a pass rusher out of the draft, IMO.
