Her name was sandy and we got her October 31, 2000 when I was in middle school. She was a good dog and I basically grew up with her. In the last couple of months, she contracted terminal cancer. I was at basic training and AIT for the army in the fall and was convinced she would die before I got done. As luck would have it, I got out of AIT two weeks ago and came home for hometown recruiting. Her cancer had gotten worse, she dropped 5-10 lbs since I'd last seen her because she had trouble eating. She was bleeding from the mouth, drooling wherever she went and could hardly eat. I gave her a final bath last night and fed her donuts. This morning we took her to the vet where she went peacefully. She was very calm and layed down to go to sleep after the initial sedative was administered. I can tell you I haven't cried this much in a while...it sucks. In conclusion, this post is written without apology to those whose knees have never served as a resting place for a tired old dog. They wouldn't understand.

Hang in there man, I know it's tough, as I just lost my BF since 2005 just a few months ago. So many tears were shed and there isn't a day that goes by that I don't miss him.

What kind of dog was she? I thought Golden Retriever at first, but by the hand in the picture she looks smaller.

And don't choose to remember her like this, find a happy picture and remember her that way.

Had to do it almost a year ago to Precious (black lab mix). First dog I've ever put down. First dog my wife and I ever had. It was rough. I don't wish that on anyone.

Prayers to you and yours for your pain.

To be honest...I cry more for a four legged person than I do for a two legged one sometimes.

The day you put down a dog is the day you wonder if it was ever worth having in the first place. So tough to do. Luckily, the memory of this shitty day eventually fades, and you are still full of lots of great memories of your dog.

i did this as well.Very tough. Have the vet cremate her remains and deliver them to you. I did this and spread my dogs ashes at one of our favorite watering holes.

This helped me.

The Last Battle

If it should be that I grow frail and weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then will you do what must be done,
For this -- the last battle -- can't be won.
You will be sad I understand,
But don't let grief then stay your hand,
For on this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship must stand the test.
We have had so many happy years,
You wouldn't want me to suffer so.
When the time comes, please, let me go.
Take me to where to my needs they'll tend,
Only, stay with me till the end
And hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.
I know in time you will agree
It is a kindness you do to me.

Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I have been saved.
Don't grieve that it must be you
Who has to decide this thing to do;
We've been so close -- we two -- these years,
Don't let your heart hold any tears.

ONLY shitty thing about dogs, they rarely outlive you.

Know your pain, man.
