I remeber the first time I put up my boxes. I was amazed at how fast they found it.

Question, do other local ducks use these boxes to nest?

Apparently Hooded Mergansers and Black Bellied Whistling Ducks do.

Good work CT.

Just finished mine up . I bought the precut cedar from a guy online. 3 boxes for 80 bucks or something close that.
We put ours on 1 1/2 in galvanized fence poles with the cone. Just make sure predators can't access the box from above.

Looks good. Definitely not too late. I have 6 boxes and they will use them well into the summer.

As others have said, add some fine mesh chicken wire to the inside for the chicks to climb out and a predator guard (cone). Snakes can definitely climb a 4x4 post.

You can get the bedding material in just about any pet food/accessory isle. Just look for pine or cedar wood shavings. Add a few inches of bedding to the bottom of the box or they won't use the nest.

Finally, if you can make the bottom swivel out it makes cleaning the box a lot easier.

Good luck! I think a wood duck box is much more helpful than donating a few bucks to DU.

Your not too late. I have five and have three hens so far hitting them laying every AM. Some will lay two times som three times a spring.
One thing I don't see in your box is a ladder. Take some hardware 1/4" hardware cloth and tack a three inch strip from the bottom to the hole. Fold in the sides so no sharp edges. This gives the chicks a foot hold as they claw their way out. I also put 4-6 inchs of Cedar shavings in the bottom. As far as snakes make a guard out of the sheet of hardware cloth and make it as large as possible. Wire it on a pole in water. If you have coons around I wire 3 ft carpet tack strips to the pole. A cool won't be able to climb if these are on the pole. If you can find a cone snake guard buy the largest one you can find and the steepest angle. I have six foot rat snakes and they are hard to keep out. Just have to watch the boxes a lot in April and May.
Good Luck. If you
Put up 2 this year you will need four next year and so on.

Whoever owns that box needs to take off the round fence post immediately and use a 4x4. It's not a snake haven if it's done properly.

I had just about decided to go with galvanized aluminum post thinking I could grease it like the legs of a tripod feeder.

Snakes can still go up an aluminum post? That one appears to have the cone too...

New member here. We recently bought property in North Louisiana with two small ponds. Ordered a wood duck box from Amazon. Looks like the ones in this thread. Includes wire ladder inside and metal guard (cone). Installed it in November on 4x4 post about 10 feet from pond, but away from trees. We've recently seen 3 pairs of wood ducks swimming around, but haven't noticed any activity in or around the box. I hope we get lucky and one of the pairs will use the box. If so, I may get another one for next spring. Any advice will be appreciated.

From what I have seen the chicks want to jump directly into the water. 10' is probably too far away.

Snakes can absolutely climb up greased aluminum posts. Been having boxes at our pond for 10+ years and haven't had any snake issues with 4x4's.

The chicks will jump onto land for sure. They can fall a country mile and not hurt themselves bc they weigh next to nothing.

What makes you think they aren't using the box? Have you put wood chips or anything in it?

I seen't it on the Discovery Channel. They just bounced off the forest floor and followed the hen for 1/2 mile or so on foot to water.

This site recommends 4" PVC pipe without predator guard as it indicates that the PVC is too slick for predators to climb.
