New water heater rules THANKS OBAMA

The most dramatic changes will affect electrical units with capacities of 55 gallons or more, since NAECA rules require new models of those sizes to have a built-in heat pump.

My hot water tank is already paid off. I didn't finance mine.

Most residential tanks are less than 55 gallons, so no big deal. Anyways, saving energy should be a good thing.

just sayin' if your unit is old, you might consider picking up a unit at home depot while you still can and set it aside for when the time comes.

Just tell the gas company you want to switch from electric. They will give you one for free.

manufacturers have forecast wholesale price hikes of as much as 30 percent per unit to cover different materials and additional components.

In Omaha, water heaters account for about $13 worth of an average Metropolitan Utilities District customer’s bill. More efficient appliances are expected to reduce the average monthly bill by about $1 a month at the minimum efficiency standards, MUD says.
awesome, pay $2,500 for new tank, save $12/year.

Heat pump water heaters are noisy.
This is extremely stupid.

agreed. read that whole article. its VERY informative.
kind of like how i could buy a 4-pack of 60w bulbs for 59 cents 2 years ago and now i have to spend $10/bulb to get an LED replacement
we're all going to die from going green.

“Running PVC vents out of the side wall or roof of a house to accommodate new units costs $250 more to do, and most houses aren’t set up to accommodate this,” Grove said.
Only if you live in a house from 1930. Most newer houses built to code will be vented correctly already and worst case it still won't be nearly $2500.
A 40 gallon water heater, which will service a 3/2 just fine, isn't going to cost anywhere near $2500 to replace in a relatively newer house.

our house has both an 80 gallon electric tank as well as a 55 gallon electric tank. The 55 gallon tank is 27 years old its a ruud & I have no idea which facilities in the house use the 80 gallon and which use the 55 gallon

My tank is 37 years old and works perfect. Should I go ahead and replace it now?
Posted on 3/9/15 at 6:25 pm to sleepytime
no need to replace it. But I would run down to Home Depot and pick up a $300 unit now while you still can and put it in the basement to install when you need it.
