Saints will have a tough time until Brees moves on

the big QB contracts really can take down a talented roster. This year will be a lot of new faces and how the leadership develops will determine if this team makes the playoffs.
A lot of big names getting released due to large salaries.
Saints by no means are the only ones but when you pay the man, your chances of getting to the Super Bowl suffer! Seahawks will find out soon!

And hoping a rookie deal guy takes you there is equally(if not more) perilous.

Not really. If you take out what Brees is expected to make, there is still 117 million in cap space left. Plenty of money. The issue is we have missed on some other big contracts and we have not hit very well in the draft.

Our next QB will likely suck.
Try winning the big game with that.

are you dumb? Do you know how many teams wish they were in our situation and had a franchise QB? These kinda guys dont come around often and if we didnt have brees we'd easily be in the lower half of the league with teams like the browns, bucs etc

This, this, and this. Brees' contract is not the problem. The problem is handing out $6-$9 million annual deals to OGs and ILBs that haven't lived up to the contract. Wiffing on draft picks have also really hurt.

please point me towards some evidence showing that we have not been able to partake in free agency due to Brees contract.
No?
thanks for playing, now move on

He needs to take a pay cut. He is not worth the money he is being paid. But I guess he's just a greedy SOB. Payton and Tom both restructured or took pay cuts so why can't drew.

Why the hell would Brees take a pay cut if we're not even asking our much shittier and more overpaid guards to do it?

Tom didn't

How talented is the roster when you don't have someone who can run the offense, make the big time throws, and lead a team? Having a top notch QB is worth the money and makes everyone else that much more valuable.

Last year he most definitely did.

And Peyton has had a larger cap hit for a much longer period of time. They threatened to cut him b/c his health is a major factor
Not to mention that got an extension, something the Saints have said they don't want to do yet. His wife is also worth 3x what he is.
but he's knowledgeable of the situation

You're talking about what he did during the 2014 season?

Under the new contract, the Patriots will free up $24 million in cash flow. It does not impact the Patriots' salary cap situation.

He most definitely did not take a paycut. I don't think you understand how those restructures work.
And Peyton did, but he's almost 40 years old.
Brees will restructure next year. Relax.

Good point. But drew is supposed to be the ultimate team player and stand up guy. So he should be the one to sacrifice. I'm not saying pay cut but restructure to lower his cap hit.

I believe he actually got an extra $1 million out of it

Restructuring makes much more sense next year

The Saints want to wait to next year. End of story
