what about the fricking linemen? Jesus, a big O-lineman running a 4.7 and they're like, "frick it. cut."

I mean it's not like anybody with a below average 40 time from a small Mississippi school ever amounted to anything in the NFL anyway...

Its a small program, they are clearly looking for raw guys with tons of athletic talent. If a CB from the SEC runs a 4.7 but you have tons of good tape on him against elite competition you can make a good judgement. Seeing a CB running a 4.7 at jackson state tells you nothing with tape against mediocre compeition at best.

Jerry Rice(Valley) was 'slow' as well ran a 4.71

Walter Payton-'slow'

Everson Walls(Grambling) undrafted 4.7

Aeneas Williams(2nd Southern NFL Hall of famer) 4.6

Michael Strahan (Texas Southern) All of the mediocre talent probably got him & Aeneas Williams prepared fir the NFL hall of Fame.

Most Sec schools(outside Alabama) shall catch up to Grambling(4) & other 'small schools ' when it comes to the NFL Hall of Fame. Despite their mediocre talent that obviously deserves dismissal.

Every player you listed has been retired for some time. That means at the latest their college careers ended in the early 90s.

If you don't think the landscape of college football and recruiting have changed in the past 20+ years, you're an idiot.

Just the fact that there are more D1 programs means that more top talent is passing up the SWAC for other opportunities. When you factor in the availability of film and the proliferation of recruiting camps and websites, it means no kids are falling through the cracks any more. The SWAC schools aren't getting the diamonds in the rough like they used to because they're being found way before it gets to that point.

Fair or foul?

Just seems kind of lazy, especially for the CFL guys who aren't taking the cream of the crop anyway.

I'm also curious as to the makeup (positions) of the players there. As pointed out, the fastest OL time at the combine was right around 5. The best TE time at the combine was 4.58. I certainly wouldn't assume a player doesn't have the intangibles to make it in the NFL at those respective positions just because they don't run a 4.5 or under.

Goes to show the whole SWAC should drop down to D2... I watched Grambling baseball play LSU and was thinking "Chalmette's better than them"

I would contend that shutting down all remaining evaluation after the 40 times is not even allowing for the possibility of any "crack". Unless skill position players were running 4.9/5.0+ , there are other measurables that are far more important than a 40yd. If I were a GM, I would strongly call into question the work ethic of these "Scouts"

is that why Tony Romo was undrafted and only made the cut with the Cowboys b/c Quincy Carter couldn't stop smoking pot in training camp?

I thought he went to like Pitt or something and transferred to Delaware when he wasn't the starter

considering the 40 times from the combine

Laser timed. These are hand times. Every large high school in America has a kid that runs a 4.5 hand timed. Pull up 247 and see the ridiculous amount of 4.4 guys. Then they magically run 4.6+ at the combine after 3-4 years in college strength programs.

Incredibly foolish move by the the scouts. Half the league's stars are made up people that can't break 4.5. So lazy.

take into account they're often heavier after college and the pounding their knees take. in HS they don't take that pounding bc they're faster than everyone else

I'm not sold that is it lazy scouting as much as it is that scouts just don't have the time.

Read an article on how NFL scouts are now attending college basketball games looking for prospects that can't make it in the NBA that might be a decent project player in the NFL.

Brian Bridgewater and Rico Gathers may fit that description since they are 'tweeners' as NBA prospects.

Robert Royal played some basketball for LSU when they were shorthanded and had a pretty good NFL career as a tight end.

Then there are obviously Tony Gonzalez, Antonio Gates, and Jimmy Graham.
