My wife was in Memphis for business a few months ago and went to this place, Flight, twice in two days. A friend recommended it.

Too late to get a reservation now but later on you could try IRIS. Surf and Turf is amazing.

Gus's is the only must. The best fried chicken you'll eat ever and there's no debate.

We could debate BBQ for days, but Central is my favorite. Rendezvous is tourist-y, but also good. I'd choose Central if I had to.

Huey's makes a good burger and is relatively inexpensive. There's about 20 locations in Memphis so finding one should be easy.

Kelly English's Iris is very, very good but chances are you won't get a reservation. If you do get in, the surf and turf is good, as is the marrow appetizer.

Breakfast, go to Bryant's or Brother Juniper's

Try to go to one of the Hudman/Ticer spots, these guys are the hottest chefs in town now. All 3 of their places are right by each other on Brookhaven Circle. Andrew Michael is their fine dining place (it's Italian, they are both from Italian families, chef's menu is what we do there), Hog & Hominy is their pizza place (might actually be their best spot, their sweatbreads app would be included in my last meal), and their new spot Porcellino Craft Butcher (breakfast, cured meats, butcher shop, and they have dinner but I haven't been so not sure what's on there).

If you want BBQ, I would say where you go depends on whether you want chicken, ribs, pulled pork, etc.

Like others posted, Gus's, the BBQ places posted are good as well as Germantown Commissary and Leonard's. If you like wings, All Star wings are awesome.

I'd second flight. Probably the best restaurant I've ever been to.

No truer words have ever been spoken.

As for BBQ, I'd say Central BBQ, BBQ Shop, and Germantown Commissary are your best bets. There is a newer place (forget the name) that has been getting great reviews, but I've never been. I do like the lamb ribs at Rendezvous, as well.

Central BBQ is a must. BBQ Shop is also quite good.

Flight is a phenomenal nicer restaurant.

Gus' obviously.

For drinking, check out Wiseacre Brewery and the Flying Saucer downtown.

Local Gastropub is also pretty awesome. There's two locations, one in Midtown and one downtown.

Edit: Forgot about Hog and Hominy. Very good as well. I went there after my graduation.

Double edit: Unless you enjoy burning money, stay away from Rendezvous. It's an expensive tourist trap. The food is terrible, but there are much better BBQ options in town.

All of Alex's food is awesome. Burgers, tenders, ribs, wings.

A few more places in Midtown that I thought of:

Young Ave Deli. Great sandwiches and a very good tap selection.

Fino's on Madison. Little Italian themed grocery/ deli that serves lunch mostly. Get the hot roast beef...open faced roast beef with cheese and red sauce everywhere.

Quik Stop. Random gas station with an amazing mix of Asian food and assorted sandwiches.
