College hoops boring; 1990 LSU v LMU 148-141 game

USA Today has an article about the slow pace of today's game. It looks back to the Loyola Marymount 1990 team and mentions the LSU OT win, which was the single most exciting sporting event I ever attended. LINK
quote:
Want a college game with a faster pace? Revisit the LSU-LMU game 25 years ago. Al Toups was so mentally and physically exhausted that all he could do afterward was go home and lay his sore right arm down to rest it. Toups did not play in the game. He was the LSU official scorekeeper. "Had to go home to do finger-ups to limber up," Toups said. "You go almost brain-dead after something like that. You feel almost as exhausted as the players. We earned our money that day."
Debi Polito, who kept the official play-by-play, saw her electric typewriter burn out, prompting officials to scramble for a replacement. The shot clock operator, Toups said, probably had a "hole in his thumb by the end of it."
The memory of that game, which also featured Shaquille O'Neal, echoes through time. Brown recalls that a man from India once approached him in an airport in France and told him it was the best basketball game he'd ever watched. "I'll tell you what I felt like after the game — a sock that got left in the dryer when they left the dryer running," Brown said. "Just boom, boom, boom. I was really fatigued from the game. ... My head was going back and forth, back and forth during the game, and I felt it was like a Chinese Ping Pong match."

The game is much, much slower now. Not sure if that is just how the game has evolved or if it is due to the rules. I grew up on the Tarkanian offenses though.

Yep I grew up watching college hoops in the late 80s - early 90s. It's a much different game these days. Just doesn't hold my interest like it used to.

Depnds on what you like. Points were cheap in that game. Players on both teams were gassed and weren't playing defense. It made for good theater, though.

Another interesting observation:
quote:
(Bo) Kimble calls that contest (Hank) Gathers' signature game because, after O'Neal blocked Gathers' first five shots, Gathers finished with 48 points in front of a crowd that included representatives from every NBA team.

One of Shaq's six triple doubles(in three years). Something like 20pts, 24 boards and 12 blocks. Chris Jackson was a little off on his shooting that day which allowed LMU to stay close and get into OT. Definitely the most exciting round-ball game I've witnessed in 50 odd years of playing, coaching and viewing. The LSU/UNLV game that same season(LSU defeated the eventual national champs, something like 105-102) falls into the top 5 for me also.

That same season? Try the same WEEK. The UNLV game was the Sunday (Jan 28) before the LMU game (Feb 3). Those two games in one week was the pinnacle of college basketball for me. It's been all down hill ever since.

As opposed watching a team like Virginia?

The biggest reason is the best players aren't developing in college they are one and done.

In that game if memory serves you had a sophomore in Jackson, and freshman Shaquille O'Neal as well as redshirt frosh Stanley Roberts and Maurice Williamson. Dale Bown had the talent on that team to be an NBA type team

There was defense, LMU played the full court press relentlessly. Back in those days college basketball was very entertining
