I'm going to go ahead and submit the 1969-1970 Gamecocks teams. They were 25-3 overall. 14-0 in ACC play. Regular season champs. Lost in the ACC tournament finals and so missed out on the big dance all together.
Not saying they would have won the title, but to not get in after a season like that because of those old rules.

'91 UNLV & phi slamma jamma were my top 2.
I know some people mention Georgetown '85 team, but they didn't win the Big East conference that year. St. John's with Mark Jackson, Chris Mullin, & Bill Wellington went 15-1 in Big East play.

And the Len Elmore-led Maryland team a few years later.

That St John's team was mentioned, and they had a fantastic starting five, but Georgetown beat them by 12+ three times that season, including a massacre in the Final Four.

Gottagive a shoutout to the 1979 Indiana St. team led by Larry Bird. That team had no biz being where they were, But guts and hustle and just destiny and ONE certain player got them there....... I was a huge Magic and MSU fan, But was kind of rooting for The underdog that night.... Plus THAT game set the wheels in motion for a huge rise in popularity for College basketball......

LOL, what? Besides Bird, who did the ISU have on that team? Bird was it. No, not even close.

That's why I didn't include either as the best team that didn't win the title.
One didn't win their conference and then lost the title game to different Big East opponent. St. John's lost in the Big East tournament and NCAA tourney to the same aforementioned team by double figures.

UofH, Drexler & Olajuwon (and some very nice role players), how is this even a conversation?

Nicks, Gilbert, Miley, Reed; Bird started all 34 games that runner up season.
4 of the 5 startes returned the following season, they had a combined 136 starts from just the previous season.
They finished in 5th place in the MVC, didn't even have a winning record in conference.

im actually with you. a team that lost in the finals and was great all year is worth a mention in this thread. people ALWAYS take this topic to mean "team with the most nba talent on their roster" when it actually needs to be "best COLLEGE basketball teams that didnt win a title."
now i have never watched a single minute of 1979 indiana state basketball so maybe you are a fricking idiot, but so far no one has intelligently disputed your post.

OK. lets compare TWO players...Manning and Bird. aside from winning it all. Who was better... BIRD.... And yes he was basically a one man team that led them to an undefeated season until that Final....

Who is even saying that Kansas team ranks as one of the top 75 best teams of all time? fricking Oklahoma was a much better team that year, too bad they had a shitty coach in Tubbs.

1993 Kentucky was a damn good team. Ran into the Fab 5 and welp...

We actually played them their closest game until the Finals.
We knew we couldn't stop Maggette and we also knew our only chance was to be on fire.
Coach K tried his bullshite with us in the tunnel at shoot around but sad part is he didn't need to.
I have often wondered how he doesn't get t'ed up any more than he does. The stuff he says is just crazy, but he never shows any emotion being such a jackass on the court.
But we played helluva wiffle ball game for cnn
