The difference between the two locations will be that the new one will have a drive thru. Maybe this makes it worth it for them ???

They used to do it all over the place when Starbucks was booming. My hometown (a suburb of Atlanta) had like 6 within 3 miles at one point.

A lot less common now, but I like it when they're around. Coffee is one thing I want extremely convenient access to.

There is a standalone Starbucks in Perkins Rowe and a Starbucks across the parking lot inside Barnes and Nobles.

This is why I was wondering if all Newks had Starbucks in them (like Target) and that's why it is there.. or if this is a 2nd stand-alone Starbucks just sharing the building.

They don't. Or haven't in my experience with Newk's in Shreveport.

There is a big initiative for new Starbucks locations to have drive thrus. The stores in suburban markets that do not have drive thrus perform significantly under those with drive thrus. They just built a new store in Metairie a few blocks from an older location and closed the older location as soon as the new one opened. Newks has no deal with Starbucks for contenancy.

Actually there are three on the same block/across the streets from each other in Houston.

Also the subject of a Lewis Black joke.

All of the Starbucks are corporate owned which is why they can put them close together. No franchisees. They have an alliance with Barnes and Noble.

They did close a bunch in the mid 2000's because of cannibalizing other locations but they have started to get back into an aggressive expansion mode again.

I haven't heard if Town Center is closing or not and it wouldn't surprise me either way. But that location stays packed.

Didn't they close several BR locations in 2009?

I went to Vancouver a few years ago and there are two Starbucks right across the street from one another....like literally across the street. And there are two more cofee shops on the same intersection. So I actually saw four cofee shops on one intersection with two of them being Starbucks.
