I'm working in Alexandria this summer. I'm from Baton Rouge and know nothing about the area. What should I do while I'm there? What are the best places to eat?

It's just a lousy backwater town that will never change.

I grew up there. Left for good 2 weeks after my college graduation. Now that my parents are gone I'll never go back.

When I would go back for holiday visits it would take about 24 hours to remember why I left in the first place.

Its a small town in the middle of LA. Its going to suck compared to larger cities.

It has some great outdoor activities in the area though. Lots of lakes and Kistachie National Forest has a great trail system (Wild Azalea trail).

As for food...Spirits is a nice place to hang out.

The best bar is Finnegans Wake downtown.

Man I feel sorry for you

Eat at:
Robbie G's
Debarge's Crawfish
BJ's pizza
Tunks (highly overrated)

That's all I got... Drinking wise I go to different places, but I will try and break them down for you:

Bayview -- older crowd usually, but a buddy of mine sister used to work there and most of my friends go there on weekend nights

Buds N Suds -- affliction wearing losers, very similar to LP ppl

Daiquiri Cafe -- turned a little ghetto recently

Finnegans Wake -- basically Alexandria wannabe hipsters

Good luck

I moved here from Baton Rouge so I will give it to your 100% straight.

Just let this shite go right now. I suggest you learn to cook! However, when you do go back down to BR it will make your appreciate the restaurant scene that much more.

This would be another black hole. There is not much in the scene of Entertainment. However, being in center of Louisiana it makes it easy to drive around to do different things.

The one thing I have come to learn is that the Pentecostal grip on this town is very strong. Plus there is still very much so a good ol' boy control here. It makes it very hard for anyone or anything to get in here.

For a single guy or girl there is nothing of true value here to be honest. I actually like the area, but I am married with a small child. I would recommend you use this summer to focus on your work and any other things you may have been interested in.

Depending on the type of work you are planning on doing and the type of person you are it can either be a really good area because there are no distractions or a horrible area because there is not shite to do.

ETA:

I am sorry. I forgot to mention the hunting scene, fishing scene, and outdoor scene is actually awesome. If that is your sort of thing.

How old are you, and what types of places do you currently enjoy in BR?

Chinese-Oriental Wok
Pizza-BJ's
Fried Chicken-Lou & Laura's
BBQ-Outlaws

Spirit's is a good atmosphere and place to drink at night, but the food is meh. There's a new pizza place downtown called Embers that is pretty good. Hope this helps

Critic's Choice (2 locations) for sandwiches

Julia's (Mexican), near the Mall.

Others have said Spirit's

Tunk's Cypress Inn (great seafood, great location on Kincaid Lake)

Bistro on the Bayou, for OT ballers

All of these are great, locally owned restaurants.

Chains are hit and miss - there is a Chili's, Outback, Logan's Roadhouse, Texas Roadhouse, BW3, Johnny Carino's, Copeland's, but no Olive Garden (for example).

Area is oriented to outdoorsmen, hunting and fishing, primarily. There are arts and music, but you have to really dig around to find them.

Honestly, not all that different from BR, culturally, just fewer options.

stick, yeah I've been. As long as tiny spicy chicken hasn't changed, I'm satisfied. I been getting sushi from there though.
