Does the bat normally bend like that or is it an optical illusion?

The laws of space and time don't apply to Jorge Soler.

BOOOOOOO!

And what's up with Rizzo in the 2 spot? I guess just getting him some ABs in the spring.

Maddon said he will have lots of lineups and do lots of tinkering.

analytically it's where your 'best' hitter should hit. I think sveum tried it and rizzo didn't like it. Not because of production, but because it just didn't feel right. Hopefully maddon can convince him it's not a demotion of any sort, but rather a compliment.

And only because i'm impatient...can we trade welly already.*

*disclaimer, i like welly...but he's the odd man out.

The most interesting things I'll be tracking in Spring:

Jorge Soler's progression, Javi Baez's adjustments, and Kyle Hendricks' progression.

I'm also sort of interested in seeing Kyle Schwarber catch. Kris Bryant is there and will be sent down, but I do want to see him play defense at 3B.

I wonder how much, if any, well see that in Spring games this year. I wouldn't be blown away surprised if he only DH'ed and gets cut from camp in favor of minor league camp very early.

I know what you are talking about with hitting the best guy second maximizes run production, but I thought the difference was like 2 runs over the course of the season.

In a 162 season, I would rather have Rizzo be happy and comfortable rather than pressing in the two hole. I fricking love advanced analytics, but I think this is an example where the marginal statistical gains in theory are outweighed by the mental tax it would take on Rizzo.

I think you have a point here. I think the theory behind this is more in line with drastic, dated ideals in baseball. Ideals like hitting a small, speedy player in the leadoff spot without any other real reason than he's small and shitty.

Instead, you put a hitter there who gets on base the most, and the theory is that he will get the most AB's being atop the order and therefore will get on base the most and the team will score more runs.

So, the theory works if you change the leadoff hitter from someone who OBP's in the .290 range to someone who OBP's in the .360 range. The theory starts to diminish in return when you are trying to put your best run producers and SLG guys in those high spots atop the lineup and you wind up washing out your lineup. At least that's how I see it.

ETA: I'm listening to Cubs baseball right now! Wood fans Coco Crisp!

yea it's negligible for sure...and I completely agree with you, if he's not comfortable there then we shouldn't put him there. So if it is negligible (and i think it is) then wouldn't his lack of comfort seem to negate what was intended to be gained? I think it would.

Now if we could unite the two and have him just as comfortable there as in the 3 or 4 spot then go for it.

I'm interested to see Fowler leading off. A prototypical lead off hitter that can get on base has been a real problem over the last several years (among other things). Hopefully he can fill that role

and playing CF. All those stats about how bad he is at CF worry me...until i think of the difference between CF at Enron field and wrigley.

As I say that he's 0-1 for the spring. Cut him.

Also, I love Len Casper...but he needs to stick to tv.

On the first pitch against the Giants, Jacob Turner threw a cutter that Castillo couldn't catch and it caught the umpire on the wrist. That umpire had to be removed and now there are two umpires on the field with Jim Joyce calling balls and strikes from behind the mound.

Jacob Turner seems to be throwing strikes but not getting calls. He would be a good find if he made it. He's just 23 and has worlds of talent.

And he was in coors before that. Both of those outfields are substantially larger than wrigley. Hopefully with less ground to cover he won't struggle as much.

Exactly. I gotta be honest. I also like how the lineup looks with our best hitter in the three hole.

Soon, we will have so many good hitters that one of them will have to hit second.
