San Francisco rent has risen dramatically over the last few years. According to real-estate marketplace Zumper, San Francisco is officially the most expensive rental market in the country, with the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment standing at a jaw-dropping $3,460 a month.

Doesn't SF have rent control? How are prices ballooning upward if there was a cap on pricing?

Not all are rent controlled.

My fiancée's friend was able to sneak herself into a rent controlled apartment; taking the place of a girl she knows. It was still pretty high but we were then told the market rate.

Pretty insane

Hmmm...AL vs CA. Let's see. You do realize that the people who actually pay that kind of rent also get paid salaries that allows them to do so? Let's just say that these folks choose to live in SF for the sheer job and career opportunities in tech that come with living there. You might be able to buy a house for $84K in AL, but you won't have a tech job that pays you $250K either. Different strokes for different people. Completely different economies and lifestyles.

I remeber in summer 2012 I was out there, I grabbed a couple real estate advert magazines. I was shocked to see the CHEAPEST house in the ghetto that was for sale being $750,000
Most apartments were well over $2500 and gas was $4.21 a gallon.
It was a nice place to visit.....

Having rent control pushes the free-market units up in price.

Met a couple in Mexico from the Bay Area whose combined income was just south of $200k. Couldn't afford to live in the city. Said bare minimum is over 200k.

Only older buildings are covered. When a rent controlled apartment opens up, it's gone literally in minutes.

That's more than 3x what a comparable apt would rent for here, I doubt I could triple my salary by moving to San Fran.

Even if you take the additional taxes out of the equation

Met a guy at UCLA that was moving to San Francisco after graduation. For some reason he already had a place in the city, and he said he was offered a $1,000 a month just for his parking spot.

Holy fricking hell

I was working numbers on a house last week and $1300/month for a 15 year mortgage freaked me out.
