I was referring to the fact they were similar because they are both pack animals and highly intelligent.

Is it excessive to give them a firm slap when they do something wrong?

nope. my entitled bitch (but very cute and sweet) is a hog and tried to eat my other dog's food. I caught her in the act and slapped the shite out of her arse. she doesn't even try any more. you can't do it as punishment or worse pure anger/retribution. has to be in the act. and i'm not saying it's always fitting, but with the food thing it worked. she won't even go near his bowl.

Wow lots of ignorance in this thread. If you know anything about training a dog, you'll know that positive reinforcement is all you need. Ever. The owners with the most well behaved dogs are the ones who have never once scolded or hit their dog in any way.

I love these thread

That dude don't know what the hell he is talking about.

Dogs are pack animals and there is a pecking order. Been that way the last million years. Why try to change it?

My step dad used to run the K9 unit for 15 years until he retired. He trained and broke horses his entire life. Both animals are very similar.

How are they similar?

Doesn't matter, dogs have no memories.

I meant similar in the way you go about training them and getting them to follow directions.

I got lucky with my dog, I just use a certain tone and stare at her and it works.

our dog is only 1 tr 3 mths. But, i haven't had to hit her once. a loud tone is enough to make her stop whatever she's doing.

The toughest part was during teething. keeping them from chewing on everything is a challenge. most of the time we just sprayed this bitter stuff where she would chew and give her a bunch of chew toys.

For the most part just giving treats when she did the right thing seemed to work.

My dog never needs discipline because believe it or not that dude minds his manners, he has never done one thing that warranted discipline. He's freakishly good. He never barks at anything, he's never nipped or bit anyone. I'm not sure that he can.

My pug was a great dog until she was three. Then my wife told a friend she'd babysit their fricking Chihuahua while she was on vacation. That dog barked at everything and ever since that time, the pug barks at everything. So now, she wears a shock collar. Barking incessantly at the fence will earn her a shock, eating cat shite out of the litter box too, and rolling around in whatever she finds that stinks in the yard will too. Other than that, saying shock collar usually gets her back in line.

Dog senses in order of importance to the dog:

1. Smell

2. Hearing
3. Sight

It's really hard to come up with a way to discipline via smell soooo...

The reason a rolled up newspaper is so effective is because of the sound of it when it hits. With many dogs you'ld swear you just ripped the nails out of their paws or something.

Dogs are also highly attuned to their owner's voice and facial expressions. So when you get stern with them you have to look and sound like you mean it.

With my dog all I have to do is give a little bit of a stern voice and that's usually enough. Every now and then I have to snap my fingers at her when I give her a command, but it's not too often and she knows she's in deep shite when that happens.

Only had to do this once, but I slapped a wooden yardstick hard against the side of the kitchen island while yelling at the dogs. Now they know right where that yardstick is stored in the pantry and they haul arse if they see me reach for it.

To be clear ... I did not hit the dogs!
