Judging at Hogs for the Cause
Posted by FleetFox504 on 3/4/15 at 9:19 am00
See they put a few judging seats for sale this year. Anyone ever done this? Is it just sampling or do you get to eat alot of food? Think it could be a fun experience as long as I dont walk away hungry.

I was a judge last year. Won a Facebook competition to do so. It was awesome.

I've done it, though I'm OOT this year. While you could theoretically eat "lots" of food, you're really sampling bites and doing a thoughtful assessment of each thing you taste. The competition uses standard BBQ competition scoring sheets; each team submits a presentation box/tray. Trays are delivered to each set of judges, who make up a plate with the various samples. Everyone tastes their samples, scores, then if you're hungry, I guess if you were seriously hungry, you could eat some of the remaining stuff in the team's submission.
I wouldn't sign up to be a judge for the sole purpose of gluttony. It's more of an opportunity to schmooze with the other judges & volunteers.

I remembered someone on here winning a prize to judge, thanks for jogging memory Hat Tricks.
FF, about 10% of the emails we get are people asking if they can judge. We figured why not let people who want to judge judge. Its fun but as Hungryone pointed out it is a little more studious than a Roman orgy. However, there is always food left over from judging and after a category is done, judges usually wander to other tables and try the best of each tables samples.

If I remember correctly, last year you also gave somebody from the food board here a chance to be a judge. Any chance of that happening again this year?

Always wondered how much instruction the lay judges get and how many real BBQ judges there are?
re: Judging at Hogs for the CausePosted by BlackenedOut on 3/4/15 at 10:50 am to NOFOX
Its typically 4-6 judges per table with one of them being a real BBQ judge. Depending on experience of others at table, the judge will walk through some finer points of BBQ judging. What to look for, telltale signs of doing X or Y, and then let the judges judge. Just depends on a lot of factors, but we often get comments from lay judges that they learned a tremendous amount about BBQ just by chatting at the table.

Good to know someone is there to correct the fall off the bone enthusiasts (those N. Texas neanderthals) and the like. I figured that was occurring considering the product of last year's GC. Glad to hear my efforts at comp bbq will be properly adjudicated.

I live so close to City Park, and I never go to this. I need to make it one year.

Yes - 4 years running. One technical question: can I remove the money muscle and cook it separately?
