So i just watched the episode with all the monks makings that beautiful (whatever it was). But when they finished and wiped that brush over it in circles my OCD took over and you may as well have been clawing a chalkboard for hrs right in front of me. WHYYYYYYY

I kept waiting for one of the Monks (or Claire) to sneeze. It would have been perfect.

I was waiting for that count Claire to purposely destroy it. It would have seemed fitting.
But, yes, I agree it was very hard to watch them destroy that thing.

It is all part of the Tibetan Buddhist ritual. Something about the shortness of life and its transition to nature...I think.

If i know anything about monks, i knew they were going to destroy it.
That or i thought Frank might flip it in a fit of rage.

Life and beauty fade away. The whole ritual is pretty amazing, honestly. Eastern culture is cool as shite.

Absolutely. Watched this documentary recently, Samsara, where they spent a few minutes just showing Tibetan monks creating one of these sand pieces. No voiceovers or anything, just the monks. It was incredible.

as everyone else has said, it's a part of their culture. I think it's incredibly cool, the Western World takes way to much pride in our individuality, while the Eastern world sees the world as each individual being a part of the community. Sometimes I just wish we as Americans could take a part of the Eastern Culture and adopt it sometimes, it would help a bit with a lot of problems we face today

Nothing lasts forever man. The monks take pride in the beauty of what they made and the memory of it, it doesn't need to be preserved

I was convinced this was going to happen.
We have a decent sized Buddhist community here and they often create these sand mandalas coordinated with prayers for various themes, people, etc. It's a beautiful thing to see in person and can be pretty emotional when they hold the dissolution ceremony (as said, meant to represent a large theme in Buddhism of non-attachment). I didn't get to see the dissolution ceremony of the one they made here when the Dalai Lama visited but I got to see it's creation.
It really is incredible and I thought it was a very interesting theme in the episode when you see the dissolution ceremony juxtapositioned with Claire and Frank renewing their vows.
