Looking into getting a lab, probably will hunt a dozen or so times a year, the rest as a house dog. Grew up with male labs, never had a female. Going back and forth on male vs female. Anyone with experience willing to opine on pros/cons? Oh - and thinking of going with Wild Rose, so if you have any thoughts to share in that regard, please fire away. Thanks

I've had both growing up. Female for me. Well mannered and calm compared to a male, in my opinion at least. Never hunted with one, fwiw.

My male is almost 4 and still acts full retard sometimes. I run this piss outta him and he keeps going. Hes really smart, but I'd own a female if I had to do it again

I prefer a male, but have hunted over some fine females. A good duck dog is a good duck dog

I've got a black female and a yellow male... my yellow male is 10x's more hyper...

Hunted with my female only, she has drive, heart and an excellent nose. In the morning, she would be out in the boat waiting for us to come out of the camp to go... My male was scared out of his whits at the sound of a gunshot...

Female. Retired my BLM about 3 years ago at 12 yo after owning 2 BLF's. I think females are easier to train and handle. The only upside to a male is maybe more drive or horsepower but I have seen some really good females that would run circles around some males. Just my $.02.

In general I have seen males to have a higher upside but the training is more difficult. For the average hunter, a female will likely be easier to handle/train and more than enough to accomplish what you need.

Google Prairie Plains Kennels and talk to Clay. If you want calm, look for a British lab.

I am considering the same. Due to my schedule, I would prefer a female started lab.

my experience MWP and Coco hit the nail on the head.. Females more biddable but males a little more drive - but sometime females run circles around males

Never had a female but my lab is a British and he's as calm as any I've ever seen. He's almost 4 now.

Got him from Southwind British labs up here close to Memphis.

Before you settle on Wildrose check out Duckhill Kennels. It was started and run by Robert Milner. He started Wildrose in 1972. He was the 1st to start importing British labs. Southwind was started by the man that worked with Milner when he started and sold Wildrose.

I've had and hunted over both. My golden right now is my first female. I'm not sure that I'll ever own another male.

honestly, females are a lot mor enjoyable to be around...however, males have more energy and are much more powerful on land and in water, so if you have very long retrieves in rough water, a male would be better suited...

honestly, never seen either a male or a female that couldn't get the job done if they wanted to...

Currently have my first lab. Black Female, British Lab. Went thru the same thing wondering which to get M vs F. My grandfather trained labs for years and I always remember him having males. Males have more drive in with tougher conditions (colder, etc). My female is 9 months and plenty of drive. Making 160 yard retrieves off of a remote launcher. 12 hunting trips a year and family dog I'd go female again.

I picked one of the calmer pups from the litter. When people say their lab is calm, they mean calm for a lab. All have plenty of energy.

Get Water Dog or a newer book. I spent a good amount of time on youtube with puppy training videos and gave our dog a great head start. Highly recommend. Train them every time you feed them, even if it's only 2 minutes. Great start to getting them and encouraging their urge to make you happy and work for reward.

I went with a male and couldnt be happier. I'll have black males the rest of my life. I have too many women in my life He's my best friend and hunting buddy. Trained him myself and it was a very rewarding process. Havent had a complaint about his stubbornness and he still has his ballz. (Might be a daddy soon )

I have a seen a female or two lay down on their handler because they didn't get enough praise after a retrieve. Princesses....

I have a black male from prairie plains. Full British. He's not quite 2 and has been awesome since the day I got him at 9 months. He almost never makes a sound. Super calm but tons of drive. Wouldn't change a thing.
