CSN has learned that the MLS Players Union is close to walking away from the CBA negotiating table.
Multiple player agents spoke to CSN off-record today to stress that the negotiations are close to breaking down. It's possible that the players may formally walk away from the table as soon as this afternoon.

The agents say that the owners have refused to budge on the issue of free agency at all. Although they say the players are willing to be creative to find a solution that both allows for freer movement and keeps salary inflation under control, the owners refuse to consider any change to the way players move between clubs.

One agent wrote to CSN that "If the players are properly and financially supported throughout the strike...they would be on board for a long strike." The same agent went on to write "it doesn't look like the season will start this weekend."

Although the agent was careful to stress that his position was based only on the position of the players they represented, other agents expressed similar things.

Overnight, CSN was told that the union may have some powerful allies in the form of the other pro sports unions. It was suggested that the other unions would help to increase the player strike fund to allow for MLS players to make a living wage while on strike. The motivation to do so comes from a desire to see MLS move away from core concepts of single entity ownership. It's felt that the model is a threat to all professional sports in North America and there is a fear that other leagues could try to emulate all or parts of the system in the future. The other unions want to do what they can to make sure that doesn't happen.

It's worth noting that when MLSPU last challenged single entity in the courts it did so with the financial support of the NFLPA.

Getting word MLS has rejected all of players' proposed compromises. Hardliners are "running league into ditch"

Says well-placed source: "It's shocking. Almost as if owners want a work stoppage. They see players as incidental to MLS' growth"

Owners' apparent lone proposal: player age 32 with 10 years' experience with same club can become free agent. #mls

what a fricking joke

this was bound to happen, with the influx of players from around the world.

The American franchise model will not work in soccer

I know, that's the biggest joke I've ever heard. I'd walk out too. Most are cut or traded well before 10 years, it's not even players decisions

ETA: There isn't a single person in the league that currently qualifies for this. Brad Davis will next year.

CBA talks sounding nightmarish. Owners not budging. One player at #MLSCBA talks told me “Hope your Orlando flight is refundable” #NoBueno

This is not good the MLS can't afford a strike

but the league has out grown its structure and needs a fundamental change

The owners aren't willing to make the tough decisions to benefit the league down the road.

I wonder how difficult it would be for someone to create a professional league that could be comprised of independent teams. At this point, I just don't see how the MLS can make the switch.

Also why we will never get a promotion relegation system.

Owners wont dump 100 million to get sent down

but it would be great for the lower level esp for teams developing good youth players

I wonder if there is a fundamental clash between new owners and older owners like Robert Kraft who invested in MLS from the beginning and lost tons of $ in the early years.

Ole Bobby Kraft probably doesn't even know this is going on right now

Pretty interesting topic. Owners really sound like they're being unreasonable.

TL;DR: The owners are assholes.

I'm worried most that MLS will lose a lot of its talent to other leagues. That said, when NBA went on strike and some players played abroad they pretty much all came back after the work stoppage ended. But NBA is the best basketball league in the world, and MLS doesn't have that clout.

I don't follow NBA or NHL but the leagues seem to be doing ok after their respective strikes. NBA especially is growing a lot.

The players still have to get FIFA approval if they want to play elsewhere because the MLS technically own the contracts. I don't know what the precedents are regarding this.

yup but MLS isn't the best league in the world

most those players did it to stay in shape like playing in the KHL.
