No idea how anyone could think Led Zeppelin I isn't their best album.

I think it is close between IV and I, with IV slightly in the lead for me.

It's hard to overcome IV if a person (like myself) ranks Stairway, When the Levee Breaks AND Rock and Roll as probably the best 3 tracks.

But, I is right there. And, as I said earlier, II and III are right there, as well. Heck, Physical Graffitti is awesome, but I judge double albums on a different standard.

The later stuff was hit and miss.

Actually - you're both wrong.

Pyromania was the bes

all i said was High and Dry was better than Hysteria, not what their best album was

Def Leppard was 1 of the first bands i first heard thru MTV. Bringing on the Heartbreak, High 'N Dry (Saturday Night) were in heavy rotation in the early years of MTV when they actually played videos with Ricky Allen in his union jack short shorts. When Pyromania came out and blew up, i was all in on DL. I played that tape out for over a year. I go back and forth on those 2, overall Pyromania is probably the stronger album, no songs you want to skip, some of the deeper cuts, like Die Hard the Hunter and Billy's Got a Gun (I noticed you listed that on the great closing tracks thread) are incredible but i think the best songs on High and dry are better than the best songs on Pyromania.

Maybe it's because Pyromania got so much play or maybe because High and Dry turned me into a Def Leppard fan that I always go back to that one, but Hysteria made me cry inside when it came out

The band that made Pyromania - for my money, the greatest album in history - deserves more

ETA: That's a great breakdown of the 3 albums and the band overall. However, they have only themselves to "blame" for not getting more credit since they made the decision to "sell out".

I can track with that experience, 100%.

I like Hysteria - the band had developed a big, glossy sound - which was way different than the earlier 2 albums - but the heart and soul of the band was still there.

When I first heard it - I was sitting in the PMAC, waiting for Heart's opening act - they played the entire album over the PA system (you know, I think Tom Cochrane might have opened for Heart then - that was the Bad Animals tour), although I didn't even know it was the new album from my favorite band. Something caught my attention about midway through - all I knew about the album was that the title track was "Hysteria" - when I finally figured out that was indeed the new album, because of the chorus, I got a big chuckle - here I was at another band's show and I just got to hear all the new songs and didn't even realize it.

Years later, I would see Heart and Def Leppard, together in New Orleans.
